Anjaana Anjaani
Two strangers meet on a suicide bridge in San Francisco and decide to live out their final weeks together before ending it all. What emerges is a road-movie romance that toys with darkness but settles into Bollywood comfort—warm, occasionally clumsy, deeply committed to the idea that companionship can rewire a broken person.

Jab We Met2007
A sparkling Bollywood road movie where two strangers share a train journey and unexpected connection. Giselle and effortless charm in equal measure, with real chemistry and the same faith in chance meetings.
But It's relentlessly cheerful in ways that might feel slight if you want your romance grounded in genuine consequence.

I Hate Luv Storys2010
Released the same year, another Ranbir Kapoor rom-com that strips away cynicism through proximity and humor. It understands that romance often happens to people who swore they didn't want it.
But The plotting is thin and the humour broad enough that it can feel like a sketch stretched to feature length.

Cocktail2012
Another Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan rom-com that understands loneliness and the relief of being truly seen. Similar arc of damage meeting damage and slowly healing.
But It mistakes glamour for depth sometimes, and the emotional revelations can feel tacked on to justify the runtime.

Something you would not have found on your own.
It's Kind of a Funny Story2010
Both films begin with suicide as premise and choose connection over darkness—but this one lives inside the psychiatric system rather than escaping it, making the romance feel like genuine survival rather than romantic convenience.
A film about suicidal ideation that chooses tenderness over tragedy. Two young people meet in a psychiatric ward and fall in love while learning that recovery isn't linear. It has the same lightness of touch about dark subject matter, but grounds it in actual mental health.
But The American teen-romance formula can feel saccharine, and it pulls some punches when the material could go deeper.

Love Aaj Kal2009
Contemporaneous romance that also plays with the theme of broken people seeking connection. Kareena and Saif have an unsettled chemistry that mirrors real uncertainty.
But The parallel timeline structure works better in concept than execution, and it's sometimes more interested in fashion than feeling.

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan2011
Post-heartbreak romance with Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar finding unlikely companionship. It shares the tone of two people learning to live again through someone else's presence.
But The humor skews juvenile and the stakes never feel particularly real despite the earnest performances.

Kuch Naa Kaho2003
A quieter romance where two people find each other through chance and circumstance, with an emotional depth that surprises. The intimacy builds slowly and feels earned.
But It's visibly low-budget and the supporting cast doesn't justify the runtime spent on them.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna2006
An ambitious drama about connection and compromise starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee. It takes romance seriously as a force that can reshape lives.
But At 221 minutes, it's emotionally exhausting and the plot takes turns that feel more soap-operatic than truthful.

Aa Dekhen Zara2009
A small-scale romance where two people running from their pasts find momentum through each other. It trusts quietness and the chemistry between leads.
But The production values are modest and it lacks the resources to make its settings or setpieces feel cinematic.

A Ghost Story2017
Where Anjaana Anjaani treats suicidal despair as a meeting point, this film treats grief as a haunting. Both are about people unable to release someone or something, and the supernatural logic they've built to explain why they can't move on.
A film about loss, time, and whether loving someone ever stops, even across death. Meditative and strange, it treats heartbreak as something that warps reality itself. Casey Affleck's minimal performance is devastating.
But It's deliberately paced—almost glacial at points—and the story refuses conventional narrative momentum. It demands patience and surrender.

Minari2021
Both films believe that salvation lives in the mundane presence of another person, not in grand gestures. Both are about luck (or the lack of it) becoming bearable when someone is standing next to you.
A quiet film about a Korean-American family chasing a dream in rural Arkansas. It's about small moments, the people we don't notice saving us, and how luck and grace are sometimes the same thing. Beautifully shot and emotionally precise.
But There's no dramatic climax—it's a story about ordinariness, which means very little happens in a traditional sense. You have to find the film in the spaces between conversations.
