All Wishes Come True!

A vibrant Chinese animated adventure that reimagines the Eight Immortals legend as a comedy romp. Eight ordinary people accidentally stumble into immortality through schemes, cleverness, and sheer luck rather than virtue. It's chaotic, funny, anarchic—think *Shaun of the Dead* meets classical mythology. For anyone who loves ensemble comedies, animation, or stories that gleefully subvert their source material.

Monkey King: Hero Is Back2015

Another Chinese animation that turns mythology sideways with wit and energy. Gorgeous action sequences paired with deadpan humour as the legendary Monkey King tangles with modern sensibilities. Pure joy.

But CGI animation won't feel cutting-edge to Western eyes; the tone swings wildly between slapstick and genuine emotion, which some find exhausting.

Castlevania: Nocturne2023

An ensemble cast of misfits and antiheroes stumbling through supernatural chaos together. Same anarchic energy, same 'these people should not work as a team but they somehow do' dynamic. Beautiful to watch.

But It's deadly serious where this is silly; Gothic and melancholy rather than comedic. Vampire hunting as grim responsibility, not romp.

Disenchantment2018

Matt Groening's answer to fantasy-comedy: a hangdog princess, a personal elf, and an immortal man trapped in an endlessly bizarre world. Crude jokes mixed with genuine sweetness. Perfect rhythms.

But Cancelled after three seasons. The humour is broad and sometimes juvenile; some episodes are filler masquerading as plot.

Promare2019

Both are animated films that weaponize visual comedy and colour to tell stories about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Both treat their wild premises as totally legitimate while maintaining constant humour.

A visually spectacular anime where a street-smart firefighter and a mysterious villain must reluctantly team up. Every frame is deliberately composed, every joke lands, every action beat sings. Pure cinema. Absurdist anarchic energy meets technical mastery.

But Abstract third act spins the plot into pure visual metaphor; if you need plot clarity, you'll lose it. Also short on character depth—it prioritizes spectacle.

The Owl House2020

A human girl crashes into a demon realm and assembles a found family of oddities to fight authority and gods. Colour, comedy, stakes that feel real, and characters who earn their victories through friendship and stupidity in equal measure.

But Aimed at younger audiences, though it plays well for adults. Disney rushed the ending across three shortened seasons; the finale feels hurried.

Kill la Kill2013

A teenage girl fights a supernatural academy with friends she recruits along the way. Absolute anarchic energy, visual gags that land, and real affection between the ensemble. Wild, never boring, frequently brilliant.

But The fan-service is heavy and sometimes uncomfortable; the plot spins into abstraction by the final arc and loses coherence.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands2020

Two misfits stumble through a post-apocalyptic fantasy world completing increasingly surreal quests. Starts as silly adventure comedy and deepens into something unexpectedly profound. Genuine warmth beneath the weirdness.

But Early seasons are purely episodic nonsense; the show takes 4-5 seasons to find its voice. Some patience required.

Amphibia2019

A girl transported to a frog world assembles friends and accidentally becomes a hero. Charming, funny, with real growth and stakes. The ensemble dynamic improves every season as the found-family bonds deepen.

But Early episodes are fairly generic; it takes time to earn the emotional beats it attempts later. Some find it too wholesome.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018

Enemies-to-allies ensemble cast where a warrior princess recruits other princesses to fight cosmic tyranny. Optimistic, funny, visually distinctive. Makes friendship feel like the most radical act possible.

But The animation budget varies wildly; some episodes look gorgeous, others decidedly cheaper. Very earnest about its messaging, which won't appeal to everyone.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

Both feature ensembles accidentally granted power through cosmic circumstance (rather than earning it). Both use animation to make the unearned and ridiculous feel genuinely consequential. Both balance broad comedy with unsettling depths.

An ensemble of girls make impossible deals for power, only to discover the cosmic joke at the universe's expense. Starts as whimsical magical-girl comedy, becomes philosophically devastating. Rewatchable for how deliberately it constructs its emotional architecture.

But Dark tonal pivot in episode three will alienate anyone expecting pure fluff. Dense, sometimes pretentious. Requires engagement; it won't baby you through the plot.
