Top Cat

  • Comedy
  • Light-hearted
  • Dip in and out

A Hanna-Barbera cartoon about a smooth-talking alley cat and his gang pulling cons and pranks in 1960s New York. It's warm, quick, and genuinely funny—the writing is sharp enough for adults, the voice acting is excellent, and there's real heart under the scheming. For anyone who loves clever underdogs and snappy dialogue.

TVMaze rating3.8

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love a scheming underdog who talks his way out of every corner, and the rivalry with the beat cop who is his nemesis and occasional ally.

Skip it if you want modern pacing or sharp, dark edges, since this is gentle, broad and leans on the same running gags for its entire run.

What it asks of you: Thirty-minute episodes, thirty in all, light and quick: it slips down easily in a few at a time, needing little concentration.

If you liked this

The Flintstones1960

Hanna-Barbera's template perfected: a sitcom structure transplanted into a fantastic world, with warmth, physical comedy, and jokes that work on multiple levels. If you love Top Cat's heart and humor, this is essential.

But The gender dynamics feel dated, and some gags go on too long. The production shortcuts are visible if you're looking for smooth animation.

Inspector Gadget1983

Same energy: a bumbler versus authority, surrounded by a loyal crew, getting into scrapes that somehow resolve. The writing is tight, the voice work is perfect, and it never talks down to kids.

But Less sophisticated than Top Cat—it leans harder on slapstick and repetition. Some episodes blur together once you've seen a few.

The Jetsons1962

Hanna-Barbera again, proving they could do futurism with charm. The designs are gorgeous, the family dynamic is sweet, and there's genuine wit underneath the space-age gimmick.

But Even thinner on plot than Top Cat—many episodes feel like setup without payoff. The animation is obviously cost-cut, which works for some episodes and not others.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Guys and Dolls1955

Both are love letters to lovable rogues who operate by wit and charm rather than violence. Both understand that con men are often better people than the straight world gives them credit for.

A musical about con men, gamblers, and alley-cat rogues in New York, where charm and quick talk get you out of trouble and everyone's got a scheme. The tone—sentimental underneath the grift—matches Top Cat perfectly.

But It's a 1950s musical, which means it stops for production numbers. If you're not in the mood for Sinatra and song, it'll feel long and stagey.

Hong Kong Phooey1974

A bumbling dog who's secretly a martial arts master. It has the same charm—lovable incompetence, loyal sidekick, officer-figure authority, and jokes that land whether you're six or sixty.

But By the mid-seventies, Hanna-Barbera was cutting corners hard. The episodes are thinner and the formula is more obvious than Top Cat's.

Sealab 20201972

An underwater crew with distinct personalities solving problems under pressure. It has Top Cat's character work and camaraderie, just in a submarine instead of an alley, and it's weirder.

But The early-seventies animation is pretty rough, and some episodes get genuinely strange in ways that don't land. It's also harder to find than the classics.

The Asphalt Jungle1950

Both are about a crew bound by loyalty rather than blood, each member with a specific role. Both understand the human cost of living outside the system.

A heist film where a small crew of distinct personalities with different skills pull a job together. Tense, smart, and genuinely touching about the loyalty between people who have nothing else.

But It's a hard noir—people get hurt, plans fail, there's real consequence. If you want Top Cat's lightness, this will be a jarring pivot.
