The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy

A gleefully dark comedy about two kids who trap Death himself into eternal friendship. Billy is an oblivious innocent, Mandy is a pint-sized tyrant, and Grim—the skeletal Reaper—is their exasperated straight man. Sharp writing, gross-out humor, and genuine pathos hide beneath the cartoon chaos. It's for anyone who loved being weirded out as a kid.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands2020

Post-apocalyptic fantasy with the same tonal whiplash: goofy adventures punctuated by genuine darkness and melancholy. Finn and Jake feel like spiritual descendants of Billy and Mandy's chaos.

But The early seasons can feel aimless before the show finds its deeper mythology. Patience required.

Over the Garden Wall2014

Beautifully crafted miniseries that marries darkness and comedy with the same grace. Two kids in a mysterious forest, mounting dread, and a narrator who's everything Grim isn't but might want to be.

But Only ten episodes—it ends when you're settled in. Some find it slow-burn frustrating.

Courage the Cowardly Dog1999

Another Cartoon Network cult classic. A trembling dog protecting his oblivious owners from genuine horror. Body horror, absurdist comedy, and real stakes wrapped in a 15-minute package.

But The animation is deliberately ugly. Some episodes lean genuinely disturbing rather than fun.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Moral Orel2005

Both use crude animation and casual tone to smuggle in genuine darkness. Both understand that the funniest thing a kid can say is the most honest.

Stop-motion dark comedy about a naive Christian boy and his minister father. Starts as harsh satire, then becomes genuinely moving. Uses comedy the same way Grim does: to make hard truths bearable. Creator Dino Stamatopoulos worked in animation before this.

But The stop-motion is deliberately cheap-looking. Tone shifts violently from comedy to real trauma—some find that disorienting rather than brilliant.

Invader ZIM2001

Alien conquest through the eyes of an incompetent invader and his confused human friend. Grotesque designs, anarchic humor, and a willingness to be genuinely unsettling. Cult classic energy.

But Cancelled mid-story. The ending hangs unresolved, which some find maddening.

The Owl House2020

A human girl trapped in a demon realm with a witch mentor. Starts as comedy then deepens into genuine character work. That same Billy & Mandy balance of humor and real consequences.

But First season is slower than it should be. It finds its voice by season two.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018

Subverts every magical girl trope with humor and emotional intelligence. Character-driven, visually gorgeous, and funny in ways that sneak up on you. Surprisingly dark when it needs to be.

But The animation style is divisive—some find it too smooth and modern, less textured than classic cartoons.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power poster

Amphibia2019

A girl transported to a frog world. Starts as broad comedy but develops genuine mythology and surprisingly complex character arcs. Chaotic energy with real stakes underneath.

But The early episodes are lighter than what comes later—takes a while to establish its depth.

Gravity Falls2012

Twin siblings in a mysterious town where cartoonish weirdness masks genuine horror. Mystery-driven, beautifully constructed, and it sticks the landing. Grim would appreciate the structure.

But Slower pacing than Grim & Mandy. Some viewers find it too serialized, wanting more standalone fun.

Craig of the Creek2018

Deceptively charming show about kids and their creek adventures. Character-driven and warm, with surprising depth in its portrayal of childhood. Completely different register but the same love of being true to kids' logic.

But It's gentle and slice-of-life—completely opposite energy from Billy & Mandy's chaos. Not for goofiness seekers.
