Odd Squad
- Mystery
- Light-hearted
- Dip in and out
Odd Squad is a live-action spy comedy where kid agents solve bizarre neighbourhood mysteries using logic and math. It's absurdist, silly, and genuinely clever—the kind of show that makes adults laugh while sneaking real problem-solving skills past children who think they're just having fun. Made for smart kids and parents who refuse to pretend children's TV is beneath them.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy bright, zany comedy where a math problem is the clue that cracks a silly mystery, and you don't mind the show talking straight to its young audience.
Skip it if you want a show with grown-up stakes or sly adult jokes, since this stays firmly in the kid zone and its lessons can feel like lessons.
What it asks of you: Half-hour episodes that move briskly and keep a light, goofy tone, asking you to follow the logic step by step rather than sit back and wait for a surprise.

Puffin Rock2015
Gentle Irish countryside adventures with Oona and her friends discovering nature's secrets. Warm, beautifully animated, and Chris O'Dowd's narration makes everything feel like a bedtime story told by someone who actually likes you.
But The pace is deliberately slow, and there's no conflict or excitement in the traditional sense. If your child needs action or stakes, this might feel boring.

Gravity Falls2012
Two kids uncover genuine mysteries in a creepy-funny town, where plot actually matters and you'll want to rewatch episodes. Smart comedy, real character growth, and a mystery that pays off—it respects young viewers' intelligence.
But The spooky imagery occasionally feels intense for the youngest viewers, and the later seasons get genuinely serialized, so you can't skip around.

Craig of the Creek2018
A group of kids navigate a creek community with wit, heart, and genuine problem-solving. It captures childhood adventure without being saccharine, and every episode feels earned. Superb voice acting and real emotional stakes.
But It's quiet and character-driven, not action-packed. Some episodes are melancholic, which can feel slower than kids accustomed to faster comedy shows expect.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Ghostwriter2019
Both use a team of young problem-solvers investigating strange cases, but Ghostwriter adds genuine supernatural stakes and a longer mystery arc that rewards binge-watching.
Four kids communicate with a ghost through gadgets to solve crimes across New York City. It's a modern reboot of the 1990s series but earns its own footing—fast, funny, genuinely suspenseful, and the ghost's mystery matters.
But The production design is quite slick and modern, which might feel less cosy than Odd Squad's world. Some kids find the pacing exhausting rather than exciting.

The Owl House2020
A human girl finds a portal to a demon realm and gets mixed up in magical mysteries and found-family bonds. Genuinely funny, beautifully animated, and proves Disney can do comedy for kids without dumbing it down.
But The first season takes a while to find its footing, and the serialized storytelling demands more investment than episodic shows. Some darker themes emerge later.

Amphibia2019
A girl trapped in a frog world learns survival and friendship while uncovering larger mysteries. The writing gets better with each season, character arcs actually matter, and there's real humour alongside genuine growth.
But The animation style is deliberately simple and not flashy. The early episodes are more comedic and episodic—the plot doesn't grab you immediately.

Hilda2018
A girl navigates a magical forest full of creatures, mysteries, and unexpected dangers. Genuinely atmospheric and sometimes spooky, with excellent world-building and a protagonist who's actually clever and resourceful without being invincible.
But It gets darker as it progresses, and some of the creature designs are intentionally unsettling. Not ideal for kids who need everything to feel safe and cosy.

Elinor Wonders Why2020
A curious girl explores nature and science with her friends, asking questions and finding answers through observation. Thoughtfully made, genuinely educational without feeling like a lesson, and the animation is warm and inviting.
But It's deliberately paced and focused on process rather than answers, which can feel slow. The humor is gentle rather than laugh-out-loud funny.

The Mysterious Benedict Society2021
The core DNA is identical—kids using brains over brawn to solve elaborate mysteries—but this one plays it genuinely dramatic instead of absurdist comedy.
Four gifted misfits recruited by a mysterious man to investigate a shadowy threat. It's smart, stylish, genuinely tense at moments, and treats intelligence as heroic. The cast has real chemistry and the mystery unfolds beautifully.
But It's darker and more earnest than Odd Squad, with higher emotional stakes. Kids expecting comedy rather than adventure-mystery might find it serious.
