Meteor Garden
- Romance
- Light-hearted
A modern Cinderella fantasy where an ordinary girl crashes into the world of F4, four impossibly rich and beautiful boys at an elite school. It's a candy-coloured, fast-paced romance that leans hard into wish-fulfilment: class conflict, jealous rivals, dramatic misunderstandings, and the promise that kindness and stubbornness can melt even the coldest heart. For anyone who loves romance that doesn't pretend to be realistic.

Boys over Flowers2009
The Korean original that essentially perfected this template. Same premise, same F4 setup, but with sharper writing and a deeper emotional core. You'll see where Meteor Garden's DNA comes from.
But The pacing is slower and the melodrama is much heavier. If you want lightness and fun, this swings toward genuine angst and family tragedy.

A Love So Beautiful2020
Chinese romance with the same warmth and accessibility as Meteor Garden but with even more charm. Sweet, funny, genuinely moving, and it trusts its emotional moments without overplaying them.
But Less of the high-octane luxury fantasy. This is smaller-scale and more intimate, which gains depth but loses some of that escapist sparkle.

Crazy Rich Asians2018
The fantasy of extreme wealth and glamour but directed at adults. Smart, funny, and it actually interrogates the fantasy instead of just wallowing in it. Incredibly watchable.
But It's a film, so one sitting instead of the slow-burn immersion of a series. The tone is more winking and self-aware than earnest.

Gentleman Jack2019
Both are about an ordinary person whose presence disrupts an insular world of privilege, and how that disruption becomes love. But where Meteor Garden is pure wish-fulfilment, Gentleman Jack asks what it actually costs to enter that world and what you're willing to sacrifice.
A woman from nothing becomes indispensable to a wealthy, guarded estate owner in 18th-century Yorkshire. It has the same power dynamic—outsider infiltrating privilege—but uses it to interrogate class and gender with real intelligence and passion.
But It's a period drama with a queer romance, not a school fantasy. The tone is serious and literary rather than candy-coloured. And it moves at the pace of character study, not plot momentum.

Alchemy of Souls2022
Korean fantasy-romance with similar leads discovering each other across a rigid class system. Gorgeous cinematography, excellent fight choreography, and real stakes that go beyond romance.
But The fantasy plot gets genuinely complex and dark. If you want pure romantic escapism, the larger narrative demands will feel like a distraction.

Itaewon Class2020
Korean series about a poor outsider entering a world of wealth and power. Gripping revenge narrative with real character development and a protagonist with actual agency and anger.
But This is bleak and violent. There's no wish-fulfilment here, just raw ambition and trauma. Tonally the opposite of Meteor Garden's lightness.

Descendants of the Sun2016
Korean romance across class lines with stunning cinematography and genuine emotional moments. The couple has real chemistry and the supporting cast is excellent.
But It's caught between romance and war drama, and neither side fully commits. Some find it tonally muddled.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before2018
Modern American take on the secret-admirer premise with real warmth and humor. The lead is likeable without being a blank canvas, and the romance feels earned rather than imposed.
But It's a stand-alone film, so much shorter. The fantasy is gentler and more grounded in actual teenage life rather than extreme wealth.

Business Proposal2022
Thai romance-comedy about mistaken identity and workplace relationships. Charming chemistry, great humor, and surprisingly smart about gender and expectation.
But The comedy sometimes overshadows the romance. If you want genuine emotional stakes, it stays quite light and frothy.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997
Both centre on an ordinary girl admitted to an exclusive institution where hidden rules and old money govern everything. But Utena is a feminist deconstruction of that fairy-tale premise—it asks what the fantasy costs girls. It's what Meteor Garden looks like through a critical lens.
An anime about a girl who enters a surreal school world governed by duels and ancient power structures. Visually stunning, genuinely weird, and beneath the symbolism is a genuine exploration of how we're shaped by the roles we're cast in.
But It's deliberately obtuse and won't explain itself. By the end it's surreal rather than narrative. Anime from 1997 looks quite different from modern TV. If you want clarity and straightforward story, this will frustrate you.

Parasite2019
The pleasure of watching someone with nothing move through someone's else's luxury world is the same, but Parasite asks: what happens when the fantasy cracks? It's Meteor Garden's dark mirror, showing the cost and futility of the same dream.
A poor family infiltrates a wealthy household through deception. It has the exact thrill of watching someone from nothing navigate a world of privilege, but Bong Joon-ho twists it into social satire with real stakes. Masterfully made.
But It's bleak, violent, and ends badly. You should watch it anyway, but if you want romance and validation, this will devastate you instead. It's two hours of escalating dread, not escapism.
