Malibu Rescue: The Series

A sunny, goofy ensemble comedy about a ragtag lifeguard team learning to work together while preventing beach disasters. It's earnest without being syrupy, built on genuine chemistry between its young cast, and pitched perfectly at the tween-to-teen audience who don't want to feel talked down to. Think *Saved by the Bell* meets *Baywatch*, but actually funny.

Outer Banks2020

Young ensemble cast tackling adventure and mystery with real stakes and surprising character depth. The chemistry crackles, and it trusts its audience to care about both the heist and the friendships.

But Increasingly convoluted plotting and a tendency to drag out reveals. If you need narrative clarity, this will frustrate you.

Kim's Convenience2016

Another ensemble that finds comedy in character moments and genuine affection between people. Warm, funny, never punches down, and every character feels real and worth rooting for.

But The humour is grounded and quiet; if you need big set pieces and shouting, it might feel slow.

Never Have I Ever2020

Teen ensemble comedy with real emotional stakes underneath the laughs. Sharp writing, characters who grow, and it genuinely respects its young cast rather than making them props for adults' jokes.

But Some storylines feel recycled from teen-show archives. If you've seen every high school trope, nothing here reinvents the wheel.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Blue Crush2002

Both centre young people working a beach job while figuring out who they are. Both treat the setting—and the friendships formed there—as genuinely important, not just backdrop.

Ocean-set ensemble sports film with genuine female friendships at its core. It's silly and gorgeous and doesn't pretend its characters are deeper than they are—just competent, loyal people doing something they love together.

But If you need complex character arcs or feminist dissection of sport, the surface-level approach will feel hollow.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers2021

Found-family sports comedy that balances goofy fun with actual character arcs. Built on ensemble chemistry and genuinely rooting for the underdogs, even when the stakes are just hockey.

But It's determinedly wholesome—if you're allergic to sincerity or need darker humour, this will feel saccharine.

Alexa & Katie2018

Friends navigating teen life with real emotional weight beneath the comedy. Beautifully acted, genuinely funny in the small moments, and it doesn't shy away from harder feelings.

But The show takes itself seriously enough that comedy is sparse in later seasons. Some find the earnestness exhausting.

Team Kaylie2019

Young ensemble tackling competitive gymnastics with surprising heart. Characters feel distinct, the coaching dynamics are fun, and it celebrates ambition without making everyone insufferable.

But Gymnastics isn't a thrilling hook for everyone, and some episodes play it very safe.

Bizaardvark2016

High-energy comedy about teens making social-media content together. Fast-paced, weird humour, and the cast clearly loves playing off each other. Great if you want pure fun.

But The premise feels dated now, and the humour is relentlessly loud. Quieter comedy lovers will find it exhausting.

Bizaardvark poster

Pair of Kings2010

Silly ensemble adventure comedy with genuine affection for its characters. It doesn't take itself seriously, moves fast, and rewards you for buying into its weirdness.

But The humour is broad and sometimes cheap. If you value clever writing over goofy energy, it will feel thin.

Nickelodeon's Unfiltered2020

A different approach: real interviews and behind-the-scenes moments with young actors and creators. If you like the cast, seeing them talk about their actual lives adds dimension to their on-screen work.

But It's interview content, not scripted comedy. If you watch TV to escape real talk, this won't scratch the same itch.

PEN152019

Both use the ridiculous safety of their settings (beach rescue, middle school flashback) as a frame to actually explore vulnerability and the mortification of learning to be competent at something new. Both find real feeling in goofy premises.

A deeply weird, unexpectedly moving comedy about adults recreating their middle school. It finds genuine pathos in awkwardness and failure, and it's inventive and strange in ways most TV refuses to be.

But It's cringe comedy taken seriously, which some find unbearable. If secondhand embarrassment makes you queasy, don't watch.
