MAID

A single-camera drama about a young mother escaping domestic abuse and building a life as a house cleaner. It's intimate, unglamorous, and often painful—watching someone scrub through desperation with a child depending on her. For anyone who values character work and raw emotional truth over plot comfort.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a slow, unflinching portrait of getting by on wages and willpower, where the small wins land hard and the setbacks are shown without melodrama.

Skip it if you need escapist momentum, since this moves at the pace of a bus timetable and lingers on bureaucracy, paperwork and grinding repetition more than on big dramatic set pieces.

What it asks of you: Ten episodes of about 55 minutes, best taken slowly, with patience for quiet scenes of ordinary work and an emotional weight that builds rather than arrives.

Fleabag2016

A woman in chaos talks directly to camera while navigating relationships and family failure. The vulnerability, dark humour, and willingness to show someone at their worst without apology are magnetic. Season 2 especially.

But The tone is arch and self-aware in a way that can feel exhausting if you need straightforward emotion. Some find the fourth-wall breaking gimmicky rather than moving.

Unbelievable2019

A true-crime miniseries where the focus is entirely on a rape survivor disbelieved by police, and the detectives who believed her. Compassionate, methodical, and furious without grandstanding.

But It's harrowing to sit with. The crimes are brutal, and the institutional failure is slow and infuriating—some people find that harder to watch than action.

The Mindy Project2012

A woman builds a career and life on her own terms, usually badly, always endearingly. It's warm-hearted comedy about competence and mess and knowing yourself matter more than looking perfect.

But The comedy is character-driven rather than joke-heavy. If you need quick laughs and sharp setups, this is too interested in watching people muddle through.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Norma Rae1979

Both centre an ordinary woman's refusal to accept her circumstances as permanent. Neither romanticises poverty or struggle. Both understand that showing up is its own kind of heroism.

Sally Field as a textile worker who becomes a union organiser—a film about standing up in a room where nobody else will. It has the seriousness that MAID does about work, dignity, and risk.

But It's earnest and 1979 in its craft. If you need contemporary pacing or visual design, it will feel slow and dated.

Olive Kitteridge2014

A compact HBO miniseries about an elderly woman, her life, and the people whose lives she's accidentally shaped. Beautifully acted, deeply kind even when characters aren't.

But It moves slowly and asks patience with people who frustrate each other. There's no central plot to pull you along—you have to care about presence and mood.

Enlightened2011

A woman quits her corporate job after a breakdown and tries to change her life, herself, and the systems that broke her. Tonally weird and specific—comedy and tragedy braided together in ways that feel true.

But The show knows its main character is delusional in some ways and brilliant in others, which can read as misanthropic if you need characters you can trust completely.

Schitt's Creek2015

A wealthy family loses everything and rebuilds in a small town. It gets funnier and kinder as it goes, ending with genuine character growth and unconditional love. Comfort without being shallow.

But The first season is rough and mean-spirited. Many people bounce off it, even though the show becomes entirely different—which is a heavy ask.

Schitt's Creek poster

Nurse Jackie2009

A hospital drama where the protagonist is competent, addicted, brilliant, and selfish all at once. It doesn't let you off the hook of liking someone you shouldn't, which is morally interesting.

But It's dark about addiction and infidelity without offering redemption or answers. The ending is divisive—some feel betrayed by it.

Mare of Easttown2021

A detective in a dead-end Pennsylvania town grieves a daughter, a town grieves murders, and Kate Winslet is quietly devastating. It's a police procedural where the actual weight is interior.

But The mystery takes a while to land, and some resent the finale's relative tidiness. Heavy accents can be hard to parse. It's bleak.

Mare of Easttown poster

Godless2017

A Western town run by women, a man on the run, and a miniseries so visually assured it looks like a Coen brothers film. Beautifully shot and properly strange.

But The plot is thinner than its aesthetic suggests, and some scenes feel lingered-on at the expense of momentum. Western fatigue is real.

Kajillionaire2020

Both MAID and this film are about seeing clearly what your upbringing trained you to accept. Both involve a younger woman learning that her normal isn't everyone's normal.

A young woman raised by con-artist parents meets a stranger and experiences the possibility of a different life. It's quirky and strange and devastatingly about recognising abuse after living inside it.

But Miranda July's style is arch and deadpan in ways that can feel precious or cold. The pacing is unusual. It's a small film in a small key.

Stalker1979

Both are about small interior changes happening while the world continues. Both are more interested in what someone chooses to do with their life than in external vindication. Both trust that meaning is cumulative and quiet.

Tarkovsky's film about a man who guides people through a mysterious zone toward a room that grants wishes. It sounds like science fiction but it's a philosophical essay on desire, faith, and what we're actually looking for.

But It's 163 minutes of slow, meditative cinema. There is no plot momentum, no dialogue-heavy explanations, no satisfaction in the traditional sense. You sit with it or you don't.
