Krapopolis
- Comedy
- Mythological fantasy
- Light-hearted
Krapopolis is an animated comedy set in mythical ancient Greece, following a gloriously dysfunctional family of humans, gods, and monsters trying to govern an ancient city. It's absurdist, hand-drawn, deliberately crude in aesthetic and humour. Richard Ayoade and Hannah Waddingham anchor the chaos. If you like comedy that swings for the fences without apology, this is for you.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love animated sitcoms where mythic grandeur collapses into bickering family squabbles, and you enjoy jokes that are dense, silly and delivered with a straight face by a cast that commits fully.
Skip it if you want a show that slows down to let its characters breathe, since this one runs at a sprint and rarely stops to make a point gently or let a quiet moment land.
What it asks of you: Each episode is about thirty minutes, so it's easy to binge, but you'll need to keep up with rapid-fire lines and running gags across three seasons, and it stays loud throughout.

Harley Quinn2019
Anarchic animated comedy with a similarly chaotic found-family dynamic and willingness to be genuinely irreverent about its source material. Fast, crude, constantly surprising.
But The pop-culture density and rapid-fire jokes mean it asks a lot of your attention. Some arcs drag.

F is for Family2015
Frank Grimes navigating a broken world with deadpan fury. Another show about a fundamentally flawed person trying to function. The aggression of the humour matches Krapopolis's energy.
But It's bleak and meanspirited in ways that can exhaust you. Four seasons of relentless resentment.

Disenchantment2018
Matt Groening's fantasy comedy about a princess rejecting her role, with a similar hand-drawn aesthetic and mythology-riffing humour. Character-driven silliness with heart underneath.
But Tries to blend comedy and melodrama, and the tonal shifts don't always land. Some seasons feel more fractured than others.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Moral Orel2005
Both use mythological/religious frameworks as scaffolding for absurdist family comedy, but Moral Orel breaks its own format and goes somewhere darker—showing what happens when the joke stops being funny.
An Adult Swim gem: starts as absurdist comedy about a fundamentalist Christian boy, then pivots into genuine tragedy and existential dread. Same anarchic animation, completely different register. Proof that animated comedy can do both.
But The tonal whiplash from comedy to something approaching horror puts people off. The later episodes are actively bleak. Rewarding but not comfortable.

Archer2009
Rapid-fire comedy built on absurdist premise and terrible people who somehow remain watchable. The show reinvents its setting constantly, proving format matters less than writing.
But It peaked early and has been chasing that high ever since. The later seasons feel thinner and more desperate.

The Venture Bros.2003
An animated series that builds something genuinely mythic from stupidity and failure. Deep character work under cartoonish chaos. Rewards obsessive rewatching.
But Cult followings are called that for a reason. It will not grab you immediately and your partner may actively resent it.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power2018
A show that takes its animated fantasy premise seriously while maintaining genuine comedy. Strong ensemble, beautiful character arcs, and a willingness to let people be wrong.
But Starts slow and the early season designs are polarizing. Some viewers bounce hard off the art style.

Inside Job2021
Animated workplace comedy set inside the conspiracy-industrial complex. Smart people being ridiculous about absurd systems. Hannah Waddingham's voice-acting presence would translate perfectly here.
But Only got one season before cancellation. Ends on a cliffhanger that never resolves. Genuinely frustrating.

Paradise PD2018
If you want anarchic, crude, mythology-adjacent comedy with a voice cast doing serious work on nonsense. Unashamed about its stupidity.
But It's stupid in ways that can feel hollow. Sheer crudeness can substitute for actual jokes. Very hit-and-miss.

Infinity Train2019
Both are adventure-based comedies in impossible settings, but Infinity Train uses that freedom to ask darker questions about meaning and escape, proving the format can go places Krapopolis doesn't attempt.
A surreal animated mystery where the setting and tone shift wildly. Starts absurdist, becomes haunting. Creature design rivals anything in Krapopolis, but in service of genuine unease. Proves animation can do dread.
But It's serialized and builds to cancellation cliffhangers. You'll get invested in a world that doesn't conclude. Genuinely infuriating ending.
