Golden Kamuy

Golden Kamuy is a boisterous adventure anime set in early 1900s Hokkaido, where a scarred war veteran and an Ainu girl race to find hidden gold while evading dangerous criminals. It's relentless fun—action-packed but grounded in real history and geography, with genuine warmth between its mismatched protagonists. For anyone who wants adventure that treats its setting and characters with respect.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a gritty frontier treasure hunt built around a battle-scarred veteran, a resourceful Ainu partner and a steady stream of Hokkaido wilderness details.

Skip it if the violence is frequent and graphic, and episodes wander through long stretches of hunting and foraging, so squeamish viewers or anyone wanting a brisk plot may tire.

What it asks of you: Sixty-two half-hour episodes across five seasons make for a long haul, and it lingers on hunting and survival details rather than rushing forward.

Vinland Saga2019

Another beautifully animated period epic about survival, cultural collision, and finding purpose after violence. It has the same unflinching commitment to historical detail and the same slow-burn character work beneath the action.

But It's slower and heavier than Golden Kamuy—less a treasure hunt, more a tragedy. The first season ends on a pivot, not a climax.

Demon Slayer2019

Stunning animation in service of wildly entertaining action sequences, with genuine stakes and surprising character depth. Like Golden Kamuy, it finds emotion in small moments between its set pieces.

But The plot is more straightforward and the world-building less intricate. If you watch for the survival and resourcefulness angle, you'll miss what makes this tick.

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill2023

A cosy adventure about gathering ingredients, cooking, and moving through a strange landscape. Slower and gentler than Golden Kamuy, but with the same meditative attention to practical survival and the joy of good food.

But There's almost no conflict or stakes. If you need tension to stay engaged, this will feel slack.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Dìdi (弟弟)2024

Both insist that surviving with your humanity intact, and finding connection with unexpected people, is more precious than any external goal—even the gold.

A live-action film about a Chinese migrant worker driving a ride-share in Los Angeles, confronting loneliness and diaspora. Intimate and quietly devastating where Golden Kamuy is epic and playful, but both centre survival, resourcefulness, and the dignity of people navigating worlds not made for them.

But It's slow, contemporary, and entirely dialogue-driven. There's no plot momentum or external stakes—just a man thinking, driving, and remembering.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020

Propulsive adventure anime with a found-family dynamic, rich character backstories, and fight choreography that surprises you. The relationship between the protagonist and his companions mirrors Sugimoto and Asirpa's partnership.

But The supernatural world-building is dense and sometimes opaque. It rewards close attention in ways that can feel like homework.

Attack on Titan2013

Mystery-driven adventure across a hostile landscape with a ragged crew trying to survive. Like Golden Kamuy, it respects its setting and gradually reveals that nothing is what it seemed.

But Becomes increasingly bleak and complicated over its run. The tonal shift from adventure to tragedy alienates some viewers.

Made in Abyss2017

Deceptively cute anime about two children descending into a vast, dangerous pit. Beneath the adventure lies real horror and loss. The worldbuilding and the relationship between the leads echo Golden Kamuy's structure.

But Tonal shifts from whimsy to genuine trauma can feel jarring. Some find it manipulative—heartwarming one minute, nightmarish the next.

Carole & Tuesday2019

A road-trip adventure on Mars about two girls chasing a dream together. Lighter in tone than Golden Kamuy but with the same sense of journey, discovery, and an unlikely partnership forged by circumstance.

But The sci-fi setting is less grounded than Golden Kamuy's historical Hokkaido. The music focus won't appeal to everyone, and pacing dips midway through.

Sword Art Online2012

A survival adventure where characters must navigate a hostile world together, learning and adapting. Early episodes have the same ingenuity-under-pressure energy that makes Golden Kamuy compelling.

But Quality is uneven. After the first arc, it loses focus and leans heavily on wish-fulfillment rather than genuine stakes. Many viewers find it hasn't aged well.
