Television series
Gidget
Other titles called Gidget: the 1959 film.
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
A bright, energetic sitcom about a teenage girl navigating school, family, and the California beach scene in the mid-1960s. Sally Field carries it with infectious charm and physical comedy. Light, frothy, and genuinely funny—the kind of show that knows exactly what it is and commits fully to the bit.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show1970
A masterclass in sitcom construction with a smart, independent female lead. Mary's workplace comedy influenced everything that came after, including how Gidget balanced character with joke.
But Slower pacing than modern TV, and some office politics might feel dated despite the timelessness of the humor.

I Dream of Jeannie1965
Contemporary magic, physical comedy, and a young female lead in a colorful world. Same era, same energy, same commitment to silly premises played completely straight.
But The gender dynamics will make you wince occasionally, and the plots are genuinely thin even by 1960s standards.

Bewitched1964
Married sitcom with a supernatural hook and a female character driving most of the comedy. Smart writing wrapped in whimsy, with Elizabeth Montgomery's charisma holding everything together.
But The husband-versus-wife structure can feel repetitive across seasons, and it doesn't always age gracefully.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Gidget1959
The source material and spiritual predecessor. The TV series takes the character and world and extends them into sitcom form, so watching the original gives you the template.
The film that started it all. Sandra Dee plays the same character with infectious joy, and the surfing sequences are genuinely beautiful. It's where the DNA came from, and it still delights.
But Sixty-five years old, which means attitudes and filmmaking styles feel remote. Some plot elements don't hold up. Also shorter and more compressed than the TV series.

Hazel1961
A comedic ensemble where a maid steals the show from the family around her. Shirley Booth's command and the show's ability to balance heart with humor mirrors Gidget's appeal.
But Domestic sitcom pacing can drag, and the premise—servant solves everyone's problems—feels condescending now.

Petticoat Junction1963
Rural comedy centered on girls and young women, with physical humor and a genuine warmth. Similar comedic sensibility, different setting.
But Very dated production values and some jokes rely heavily on stereotypes about rural life.

That Girl1966
Independent young woman in the city making her own way, with Marlo Thomas bringing real charm and comedic instinct. Slightly more sophisticated than Gidget but from the same lineage.
But Uneven writing across seasons, and some storylines feel slight even when they're meant to matter.

The Monkees1966
Pop culture comedy aimed at young audiences, with high energy, physical humor, and genuine affection for its absurdity. Same production era, same willingness to be silly.
But Intentionally chaotic and occasionally incomprehensible. If you need narrative coherence, this will frustrate you.

Here Come the Brides1968
Young ensemble cast in period setting with light romance and comedy. Robert Brown and Mark Lenard anchor it while the younger cast gets their moments, the way Gidget balances support and spotlight.
But Uneven tonal mix of comedy and Western convention. Some episodes feel like they're not sure what they want to be.
