Eyeshield 21
- Action
- Light-hearted
Eyeshield 21 is a high-octane sports anime about a bullied boy whose legendary sprinting speed makes him the secret weapon of a ragtag American football team. It's fast, genuinely funny, and built on the principle that underdogs with heart can overcome anything. Perfect for anyone who loves underdog stories, character growth, and animation that captures real athleticism.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love underdog sports stories where a kid with a gift for running makes the team, and you enjoy loud, broad comedy wrapped around hard-hitting football matches.
Skip it if you want a grounded, realistic sports drama, since its gags are cartoonish and the football is wildly heightened, and the run is long at 145 episodes.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long run: slapstick bursts give way to tense matches that build across whole arcs, so it rewards steady viewing over dipping in.

Haikyuu!!2014
A volleyball anime with the same DNA: scrappy underdog team, expert pacing, brilliant character arcs, and sports animation that makes you feel the physical reality of the game. Emotionally generous without being saccharine.
But It's longer than you expect (four seasons). Also, if volleyball doesn't grip you, the early pacing can feel slow.

Kuroko no Basuke2012
Same energy: a gifted outsider joins an underdog basketball team and discovers his potential. Gorgeous animation, wild character abilities treated seriously, and enough comedy that you actually like spending time with these people.
But The power creep in later seasons gets a bit silly. Some arcs drag longer than they need to.

Chihayafuru2011
Competitive anime about a team sport (competitive poetry reading) where passion matters more than athleticism. Character-driven, funny, beautifully paced, with real emotional stakes. Proves sports anime can be about anything.
But It's primarily character drama, not action. If you want constant kinetic energy, this is quieter and more introspective.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!2020
Both are love letters to the joy of being part of a team where everyone has a specific role and magic happens at the intersection. Both films are essentially about collaboration as its own reward.
Not a sports anime at all, but about three girls making anime with feverish passion and coordination. It captures the exact tone—the friendship, the absurd humor, the way talent emerges through collaboration, the infectious joy of being good at something with people you love.
But It's slice-of-life comedy about creative work, not competition or athletics. If you want sports stakes or plot momentum, this is purely character and vibe. Also unfinished (one season).

My Hero Academia2016
Shonen at its best: an underdog kid discovers latent ability and joins a team of misfits. Excellent humor, beautiful fight animation, and genuine warmth in how it treats its large cast. Incredibly fun.
But The later seasons dip in quality. Also, it's become ubiquitous enough that the underdog element feels less fresh.

Food Wars2010
Comedy-action about a determined outsider fighting his way through a culinary school via competitive cooking battles. The humor lands, the tournament arcs are genuinely tense, and the food actually looks incredible.
But The fanservice gets excessive and distracting. Some characters exist mainly to be sexualized, which undercuts the show's warmth.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Two girls pursue music on Mars against impossible odds. Utterly charming, gorgeously animated, with a genuine love for underdog persistence and friendship. Lighter and more optimistic than most sports anime, but built on the same heart.
But It's science fiction romance rather than competition, so if you want athletic stakes, this pivots. Also slower and more meditative.

Ping Pong The Animation2014
A table tennis anime with aggressively experimental animation and genuine depth. It's about rivalry, redemption, and the cost of obsession. Stylish, moving, and utterly unique in execution.
But The visual style is deliberately chaotic and won't appeal to everyone. Only five episodes long, which means character development has to happen fast.

Mob Psycho 1002016
A middle schooler with psychic powers learns that having talent means nothing without emotional maturity. Hilarious, visually inventive, with surprisingly deep emotional logic. The growth feels earned, never cheap.
But It's more about psychology than action, despite the supernatural setting. Also quite silly, which some find at odds with its sincere moments.
