Television series
Coven Academy
A supernatural boarding school drama set in New Orleans where teenage witches and warlocks navigate ancient magical conflicts, forbidden romance, and deadly secrets. It's *Gossip Girl* meets witchcraft: high-stakes, darkly funny, propulsive. For anyone who wants their teen drama with actual stakes and magic that matters.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a New Orleans setting with atmosphere to spare, and characters whose romantic and political tangles matter as much as the spells.
Skip it if the romance and cliquey school politics take up a lot of room, so if you want your witchcraft grim and sparse, the soapy teen energy may grate.
What it asks of you: A single season of fifteen episodes. The mood is shadowy and playful by turns, and the pace leans toward character scenes over rapid plot turns.

The Owl House2020
A Disney animated series that treats its magical world and character relationships with genuine weight. The story expands from fun adventures into something emotionally complex and narratively ambitious, with real consequences for choices made.
But Animation can feel lightweight to some viewers, and the first season takes a few episodes to find its footing. The pacing is episodic before it locks into serialized storytelling.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina2018
Dark academia meets witchcraft in a tone that respects both horror and character. It understands that teenage friendships matter as much as the supernatural stakes, and it's willing to let both get genuinely messy and painful.
But It can be self-serious to the point of melodrama. Some viewers find the relentless grimness exhausting, especially in later seasons when it chases increasingly baroque mythology.

Euphoria2019
High school as a pressure cooker where characters face real, complex consequences. The cinematography is stunning, the performances are raw, and it refuses to simplify its characters' motivations even when they're behaving badly.
But It's genuinely heavy—addiction, trauma, sexuality, violence. Not escapism. Some episodes can feel exploitative rather than illuminating, and the pacing sometimes collapses under its own intensity.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Trick 'r Treat2007
Both use supernatural rules as a mirror to social power structures. Magic and monsters enforce the hierarchy, not bypass it.
An interlocking Halloween mystery where power, secrets, and community collide through supernatural intervention. It shares Coven Academy's interest in how magic functions as social currency and how the rules of a supernatural world reshape ordinary hierarchies.
But It's a horror-comedy with tonal whiplash that doesn't work for everyone. The interconnected narrative structure requires attention, and some viewers find the gore gratuitous rather than purposeful.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer1997
The template for supernatural teen drama that matters. It balances genuine scares with humour, serialized mythology with episodic storytelling, and treats high school as a real crucible where stakes are both personal and cosmic.
But Seven seasons is a massive commitment. The early seasons have a very '90s feel, and some arcs lose focus in the middle. It can be uneven in how it handles darker subject matter.

Legacies2018
Set in the *Vampire Diaries* universe but younger and less soap-opera-ish. It's genuinely fun, with a diverse cast and better pacing than its predecessors. The supernatural mysteries are pleasingly intricate without being exhausting.
But If you haven't seen the earlier shows, you'll miss some context. It plays it safer than *Chilling Adventures*—the darkness is present but doesn't quite bite the way some viewers want it to.

Never Have I Ever2020
A high school comedy-drama that actually knows how to be funny while exploring identity and belonging. It's warm without being saccharine, and it respects its characters' interior lives even when the plot is light and speedy.
But It's primarily a comedy, so if you're looking for dark supernatural stakes, this is too gentle. The later seasons lose some narrative focus trying to juggle too many romantic subplots.

Riverdale2017
A small-town mystery that spirals into increasingly baroque supernatural territory. If you want melodrama, secrets, murder, and beautiful people behaving very badly, this delivers. It commits fully to its soap opera instincts.
But It becomes increasingly unhinged and plot-driven over quality. Later seasons especially sacrifice character logic for shock value. It's for people who enjoy the ride more than the destination.

The Midnight Club2022
A supernatural mystery where young characters face real danger in a Gothic boarding school setting. Each episode reveals more about the central mystery while developing its ensemble cast, and the atmosphere is carefully maintained throughout.
But It's more eerie than action-packed, and some viewers find the pacing meditative to the point of sluggish. The ending is deliberately ambiguous rather than explanatory.

Arcane: League of Legends2021
Both treat magic as a class issue. Power is currency, friendship across the divide is dangerous, and the real war isn't between good and evil but between those with power and those without.
A visually stunning animated series about magic, class warfare, and forbidden bonds between enemies. It builds mythology where every rule matters, where power has price, and where teenage choices reshape entire worlds. The animation is genuinely innovative.
But It's animated, which some equate with lighter content—it isn't. Character deaths are permanent and devastating. The second act slows for worldbuilding, and not everyone has patience for that investment.
