Couples Therapy

Other titles called Couples Therapy: the 2019 series (Showtime on Demand).

VH1's unfiltered therapy sessions with celebrities and reality TV personalities grappling with infidelity, fame-fueled tension, and the wreckage of public relationships. Jenn Berman's couch becomes a confessional where egos collide and denial crumbles in real time. Messy, uncomfortable, genuinely revealing—a voyeur's dream with actual stakes.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like watching famous people get unusually candid about the messy, private parts of their love lives, and you enjoy a therapist's blunt, practical questions more than the gossip.

Skip it if you find celebrity gossip exhausting on its own, since the framing stays close to the tabloid premise and each hour-long session can feel repetitive.

What it asks of you: Sixty episodes across six seasons, each an hour, so you commit to sitting through one couple's confessions at a time, unhurried and talk-heavy.

Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars2014

Same DNA as Couples Therapy but with group dynamics and competitive challenges that force raw honesty. When couples argue while doing trust falls, defenses crack in unexpected ways.

But The manufactured obstacles feel gimmicky compared to the raw therapy room. Some couples perform more than they process.

Love & Hip Hop: New York2011

Generational predecessor that documents relationship drama unfolding across seasons with real consequences. You watch patterns repeat, couples mature, or crash spectacularly—authenticity through repetition.

But It's serialized melodrama first, therapy second. If you want insight over entertainment value, you'll find less of it here.

MTV Floribama Shore2017

Reality ensemble where romantic entanglements and breakups happen in real time, witnessed by housemates who force accountability. Messy authenticity without the therapist frame.

But Romance is one subplot among many. If you're after relationship focus, you'll spend too much time on house drama and drinking games.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Shrinking2023

Both examine relationships through a therapeutic lens, but Shrinking shows what happens when the person holding space is as broken as the couple on the couch. Same psychological honesty, different vantage point.

Flips the dynamic entirely—therapists with their own wreckage work patients from broken places. Examines how healers fail in love with the same blind spots their clients have. Bill Burr and Harrison Ford deliver devastating vulnerability.

But It's a drama first, therapy second. If you want observation over narrative, you'll find the story gets in the way.

Million Dollar Listing: New York2012

Parallel obsessions with status and ego that sabotage relationships, examined through professional ambition instead of therapy. Same psychological patterns, different staging ground.

But Relationships are peripheral to career drama. You're getting relationship dysfunction as a side effect, not the focus.

Summer House2017

Vacation-pressure-cooker format where couples' fractures accelerate. Shared space and limited escape routes force conversations people would normally delay.

But Alcohol and party atmosphere undercut serious resolution. Drama often resets weekly rather than building toward real change.

The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On2022

Extreme couples therapy format where partners date other people to test commitment. Watches like Couples Therapy if the therapist said 'go date someone else and figure it out.'

But The gimmick overwhelms the psychology. Relationship chaos becomes entertainment product rather than examined experience.

Stay2005

Both ask if you can actually repair something or if the trying is just postponement. Couples Therapy answers practically; Stay answers poetically. Same question, opposite aesthetics.

Marc Forster's hallucinogenic meditation on a couple trying to save their relationship across splintering timelines and impossible geometry. What if Couples Therapy happened inside a dissolving dream where nothing stays fixed?

But Deliberately incoherent and visually exhausting. If you watch for plot clarity or emotional throughline, you'll feel lied to by design.
