Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Kevin Smith's 2008 comedy about two broke friends who decide to make porn together and accidentally fall for each other. It's raunchy, sweet, and genuinely funny, built on real chemistry between its leads. Smith at his most confident with dialogue and character, landing jokes that feel earned rather than forced. For people who like their comedies messy, talky, and unafraid of sex.

Clerks1994
Smith's debut: the blueprint for his whole career. Black-and-white, shot in a convenience store, built entirely on dialogue. If you love the rhythm and voice of Zack and Miri, this is where it started.
But The production is genuinely cheap and sometimes it shows. Some jokes land harder in memory than on screen.

Superbad2007
Two friends facing a night that might change everything, with genuine heart under the comedy. Greg Mottola nails the balance of crude humour and real affection that Smith goes for here.
But It's become ubiquitous enough that the freshness has worn off. Some of the references feel dated now.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall2008
Same year, same energy: a movie about real people in an impossible situation, trying to be funny without winking at the audience. Judd Apatow's world, but with genuine sweetness at the core.
But The plot occasionally asks you to accept contrivance. The humour sometimes veers into territory that feels stretched.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Lianna1983
Both treat the sexual act as a vehicle for self-knowledge rather than mere comedy or transgression. Both are interested in what it means to step outside your safety.
John Sayles made this about a woman discovering her sexuality late, stepping outside her expected life. Like Zack and Miri, it treats sex as intimacy and self-discovery rather than punchline, and does so with warmth. A very different era and register, but the same emotional truth.
But It's a 1983 indie, shot on a small budget. The pacing is deliberate. Some will find it slow; others will find it patient.

I Love You, Man2009
A romantic comedy that trusts its dialogue and character chemistry the way Smith trusts his. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel have the same easy banter Rogen and Banks manage here.
But It's a studio film with studio DNA—more polished, less sharp. Some will find it safer.

Chasing Amy1997
Smith exploring desire and relationships with actual vulnerability. Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams crackle the same way Rogen and Banks do. Proof Smith understands romance.
But The ending divides people. Some find it profound; others find it frustrating in how it resolves.

Tropic Thunder2008
A comedy about making something that doesn't work, with actors who trust each other and the material. The chaos is actually purposeful, and people keep it loose and real.
But It's a satire that sometimes peaks in the press kit rather than the actual film. Can feel exhausting by the end.

This Is the End2013
Seth Rogen and his friends playing exaggerated versions of themselves, unafraid to be stupid or vulnerable. The chemistry between the cast is everything, just like here.
But The premise outstays its welcome. What's funny in minute fifteen might feel thin by minute seventy.

Adventureland2009
Greg Mottola again, but in smaller key: a film about working-class people trying to figure out their lives while working a terrible job. The humour is gentler but the affection is real.
But It's quiet in a way that can feel slow. If you want constant energy, you'll drift.

Duck Soup1933
Both films treat dialogue as an action, not decoration. Both build comedy from character and situation rather than setup-punchline. Both trust the audience to keep up.
Marx Brothers at peak chaos: two people in an impossible situation, solving problems through increasingly absurd dialogue and physical comedy. If you love how Rogen and Smith play with language and situation, this is the ancestor.
But It's 1933. The rhythm is completely different. You have to adjust your ear for silent-film timing and slapstick logic.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)2021
Zack and Miri is ultimately about two people finding community and belonging with each other despite everything. Summer of Soul is about a community finding itself. Both insist that joy and connection matter, and both were made by people unashamed of sincerity.
A documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that was lost to time. It's about joy, community, and people showing up for each other. None of it is cynical. It will make you feel something real.
But It's a documentary, not a narrative. If you want plot and character arcs, this isn't it. It requires you to sit with image and music.
