Trolls Band Together

Trolls Band Together is a bright, music-soaked animated adventure about a found family learning to reconcile with actual family. It's genuinely funny for adults, packed with cover songs and celebrity voices, and surprisingly tender about grief and belonging. If you loved the first two films or just want something that makes you smile without feeling like a chore, this lands.

Trolls2016

The original film that started it all—pure joyful chaos, incredible soundtrack, and the foundation for Branch and Poppy's dynamic. Watching it first makes Band Together hit harder.

But The humor can skew very broad and silly. If you need grounding in character drama, this isn't it.

Shrek 22004

Sequel that's arguably better than the original. Smart jokes layered for adults, genuine emotional stakes, and a cast having an absolute blast. The template for what this kind of film can do.

But Gets pretty weird and absurd. Some of the humor won't land if you're looking for something traditional.

The Lego Movie2014

Rapid-fire jokes, celebrity cameos, a surprisingly heartfelt message about creativity and belonging. Aggressively entertaining and structured so there's always something happening.

But The constant hyperactivity can feel exhausting if you want something quieter or more contemplative.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend2015

Both use pop-music satire and celebrity culture as a lens for examining what it means to be valued and seen. Band Together lightens the load, but the DNA is there.

A musical comedy-drama about belonging and identity that starts as satire and becomes genuinely moving. Full of covers and original songs that actually serve character development. If you loved the emotional turns in Band Together, this goes deeper.

But Shifts tone dramatically from zany comedy to real psychological darkness. The first season is lighter than what comes later, which some find jarring.

Sing2016

Colorful animated ensemble musical with genuine warmth. Each character gets their moment, the songs serve the story, and it's got real heart without being saccharine.

But Follows a pretty standard sports-movie redemption arc. Very little surprises you if you know the genre.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted2012

Circus hijinks, celebrity-voice chaos, and a film that knows exactly what it is. Fun, fast, and doesn't ask you to take anything seriously for ninety minutes.

But Thinner plot than the earlier films. If you want substance, this isn't where to look.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish2022

Modern animated filmmaking at its most confident. Stunning to look at, genuinely funny, and it actually has something to say about legacy and mortality. Worth watching for the visuals alone.

But Much darker and sadder than typical family fare. Some parents find it surprisingly heavy for a kids' film.

How to Train Your Dragon2010

Adventure that takes itself seriously enough to matter. Strong character work, actual stakes, and a relationship at the center that feels earned rather than easy.

But Slower burn than something like Trolls. If you want constant music and jokes, you might find the pacing odd.

Encanto2021

Gorgeous animation, fabulous music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a genuinely thoughtful story about family pressure and self-worth. It earned its cultural moment.

But The plot is fairly predictable. Some songs will get stuck in your head forever—whether you want them to or not.

The Prince of Egypt1998

DreamWorks when it was swinging for narrative and animation both. Epic scope, beautiful musical moments, and a surprising amount of genuine dramatic weight for an animated film about the Bible.

But Very different tone from Trolls Band Together—this is serious and grandiose. Takes itself completely straight.

Pinocchio1940

Both films are about a character learning that belonging requires showing up for family even when it's hard. Pinocchio is the proto-text for this specific emotional journey.

The original film that taught Disney (and animation) that you could break hearts in a children's story. Darker, more complex, and architecturally similar to Band Together's structure of rescue and redemption.

But Genuinely unsettling in places. The Pleasure Island sequence still disturbs people. It's a product of 1940, which shows.

Everything Everywhere All at Once2022

Both center on a protagonist learning that the version of their family member they resent is the one they need to save. Both prioritize emotional truth over plot logic.

A multiverse adventure that's visually unhinged, tonally wild, and deeply about family reconciliation despite difference. Chaotic, silly, profound, and emotionally devastating by the end.

But Wildly weird and frequently gross. The tone whiplash between absurdist comedy and real grief requires adjustment. Nothing like Band Together except in spirit.
