The Angrez 2

A Hyderabad comedy sequel where returning NRIs clash with a local antagonist still nursing old grudges. Broad, silly, rooted in regional Indian humour and the eternal friction between cosmopolitan outsiders and entrenched local power. Energetic in the way Hindi comedies of this era tend to be—not subtle, but committed to the bit.

Welcome2007

A Hindi comedy about bumbling criminals and mistaken identities with the same anarchic energy and regional flavour. Fast, ridiculous, and genuinely funny if you surrender to its logic.

But It's a Bollywood film from 2007, so the humour is broad and the pacing can feel chaotic if you're not in the mood for that register.

Rang De Basanti2006

Young people from different walks of life collide in Delhi, mixing comedy with genuine stakes. Explores the gap between idealism and compromise in a way that feels earned.

But The tonal shifts between comedy and drama are sharp; it asks a lot more of you than a pure comedy does.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa2007

A supernatural mystery-comedy with real laughs, clever misdirection, and a lead performance that carries you through. Smart in a way that doesn't insult the audience.

But The horror elements might undercut the comedy for you, or vice versa—it straddles genres in a way that doesn't always land.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Pyaasa1957

Both explore the friction between outsiders and insiders in Indian cities, but Dutt asks: what if the outsider isn't comic relief, but the only honest person in the room?

Guru Dutt's masterpiece about a struggling poet in Bombay—not a comedy, but shot through with bitter irony and social critique. What happens when a character like Salim meets a film that understands desperation as tragedy rather than punchline.

But It's a black-and-white film from 1957 and genuinely sad; if you're coming for laughs, the shift in register will feel like a betrayal.

Hera Pheri2000

Three struggling men accidentally stumble into a kidnapping scheme. Perfectly calibrated chaos with a cast that knows exactly how to time a joke.

But It's episodic and digressive; if you need a tight plot, you'll find it frustrating.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na2008

A romance-comedy about two best friends who won't admit they're in love. Charming, witty, and full of genuine warmth beneath the jokes.

But It's a very sweet film; if you find that tone cloying, it won't work for you.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na poster

3 Idiots2009

A comedy-drama about friendship and education that somehow juggles big laughs with real emotional weight. Hugely entertaining and unexpectedly moving.

But It's long and covers a lot of ground, so the tonal shifts can feel whiplashing if you're not prepared for them.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha2015

A romantic comedy that treats its female lead with genuine respect and humor. Funny, warm, and refuses to make her appearance the joke.

But The film depends on you accepting a fairly conventional romantic arc; if you're tired of that formula, skip it.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha poster

Golmaal – Fun Unlimited2006

Four friends and one chaotic plot about a stolen briefcase. Silly, frenetic, and full of physical comedy that doesn't need subtlety to work.

But It's aggressively dopey; if you prefer comedy with a bit of intelligence, this will wear thin fast.

Golmaal – Fun Unlimited poster

Fukrey2013

A caper-comedy about small-time hustlers with genuine warmth and a cast that commits fully to the absurdity. Surprisingly charming.

But The humour is crude and the plot mechanics are predictable; it's not trying to be clever.

The Sting1973

Both turn revenge and elaborate schemes into entertainment, but where The Angrez 2 is loose and regional, The Sting is intricate and cosmopolitan—a mirror held up to the approach itself.

A perfectly engineered heist-comedy about con artists outwitting each other with style. If you like the premise of elaborate schemes and revenge plots, this is the blueprint done immaculately.

But It's an American film from the '70s with a completely different sensibility; the humour is dry and the pacing slower than what you're used to.

Piku2015

Released the same year, both films use Hyderabad/Delhi settings and NRI culture as their playground, but Piku mines comedy from dignity and eccentricity rather than conflict.

A comedy-drama about a headstrong woman, her difficult father, and a taxi driver, all colliding in Delhi. Real, lived-in humour that comes from character rather than setup.

But It's quieter and more intimate than broad comedy; the jokes arrive sideways, and some might not read as jokes at all.
