Thappana
- Buddy comedy
- Light-hearted
Thappana is a Malayalam comedy following two freshly released convicts—a gruff man and a sharp woman—as they hit the road together. It's a picaresque buddy film with heist-movie energy, built on banter and the friction of two criminals trying to survive outside. Warm, funny, and surprisingly tender about people trying to remake themselves.

Drishyam2013
Another Malayalam gem with Mohanlal playing a man cornered by circumstance, forced to use wit and will to survive. Taut, clever plotting with genuine moral weight. You'll see why Kerala makes crime stories this good.
But It's less a heist or buddy film and more a tense thriller—if you want lightness and charm over suspense, this shifts the tone significantly.

Angamaly Diaries2017
A Malayalam film that sprawls like Thappana does: episodic, full of small-time characters, crooks and dreamers colliding with comedy and sudden violence. Shot with real texture and a lived-in feel for its world.
But The structure is deliberately loose and shaggy. If you need a tight three-act spine, this will feel like it's wandering.

Piku2015
A Hindi road movie where two people who shouldn't work together do anyway. Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan have the easy banter of Samson and Mallika, and it's genuinely funny without trying hard.
But It's softer and more romantic than Thappana. If you want edge and crime-world grit, this is warmer domestic comedy.

Kind Hearts and Coronets1949
Both celebrate the resourcefulness and humor of characters on the wrong side of the law, finding joy and connection amid the con.
A British comedy-crime film where one man plays eight roles, scheming and murdering his way toward an inheritance. It has the same pleasure in watching small-time hustlers outwit authority, and the same dark-comic tone about people without choices.
But It's in black and white, made in 1949, and British—the comedy is verbal and dry rather than physical. It's also a class satire that might feel distant from Thappana's world.

Special 262013
Another Hindi heist-buddy film with real charm. Con men playing a game, outsmarting the system. Clever plotting and the camaraderie between leads gives it legs beyond the usual heist-movie mechanics.
But It takes itself more seriously than Thappana does. The tone is slicker, less lived-in, more Bollywood-polished.

Lucia2013
A Kannada film about a man in the margins of legality and society. Raw, funny, sad, unflinching about small-time dreamers. One of the best indie crime comedies from South India in a decade.
But It's genuinely bleak under the humor. If you want just comfort and charm, this has edges that bite.

Badlapur2015
A Hindi revenge film where Varun Dhawan plays a character who has to survive outside the law. Crime and character study mixed with dark comedy. Shows how revenge can distort a person.
But It's much darker than Thappana. The comedy is gallows humor; the mood is vindictive, not warm.

Pushpaka Vimana2017
A Kannada film about a drifter and a woman, traveling and scheming. Low-key, funny, and genuinely curious about how people survive and connect when they have nothing.
But It's quieter and more introspective than Thappana. If you want plot momentum and laughs-per-minute, this moves at its own unhurried pace.

Thottam
A Malayalam film about life on the margins, small criminals and their tiny dramas. Works as both comedy and portrait of a world. Same year as Thappana; same region, same sensibility.
But It's less focused on the buddy dynamic and more an ensemble piece. If you want the chemistry between two leads, this spreads the focus wider.
Rififi1955
Both understand that criminals can be charming and sympathetic, and that planning and wit matter more than violence.
A French heist film so influential that heist movies still copy it. Tense, witty, and built on the camaraderie between criminals. A masterclass in how thieves think and bond. Oddly warm for a film about people stealing.
But It's a noir from the 1950s—the pacing is deliberate, there's a famous heist sequence with no dialogue or music, and it's French. Not what modern audiences expect from a crime film.

Taxi Driver1976
Both explore how people survive when they're locked out of ordinary life, and both refuse to judge their characters—we see their full humanity, not just their crime.
An American film about a man adrift in the city, taking whatever work he can, driving and watching and slowly unraveling. Robert De Niro gives a portrait of someone crushed by circumstance, trying to find meaning in chaos. It's about survival and moral vertigo.
But It's bleak, violent, psychologically disturbing, and very different in tone—a masterpiece of alienation rather than comedy. Nothing like Thappana on the surface, but the meditation on people living outside society is total.
