A faded silent-era star, shut away in her decaying mansion, seduces a young writer into helping resurrect her career — gothic, sardonic, and quietly monstrous. The template for every 'reclusive actress' story since.

But No literal blood, no camp counsellors — this is black-and-white Hollywood noir, sharp-tongued rather than gory.

Jennifer's Body2009

Teen horror-comedy with a furious, funny script and a central female friendship that's more unsettling than any of the actual demon stuff. Cult reappraisal was deserved.

But Diablo Cody's dialogue is an acquired taste — very stylised, very quippy, occasionally more clever than scary.

Ready or Not2019

A bride hunted through a mansion by her new in-laws, played entirely for chaotic, blood-splattered comedy. Samara Weaving is a magnificent final girl with a sense of humour.

But It's leaner and pulpier — less interested in the psychology of fame or legacy, more interested in crossbows.

The Cabin in the Woods2012

Takes the entire architecture of horror-franchise-making apart and turns it into the plot itself. If you like the industry-satire half of Camp Miasma, this is that idea taken to its logical, gleeful extreme.

But It's more sci-fi-conspiracy than romance-horror — the desire and intimacy angle you're getting here is largely absent.

But It's a slow-burn ensemble drama across seasons, not a single blood-soaked night. Big commitment for a very different pace.

A campus slasher played as full soap-opera camp, with a killer stalking a sorority and everyone treating murder as mildly annoying. Broad, silly, unapologetically trashy fun.

But It's much broader and less character-driven — pure spectacle over the slow-burn intimacy this film is built on.

But It's a real, painful reckoning with homophobia in the industry, not a romp — sombre where Camp Miasma is playful.

But Genuinely rough filmmaking, dated in ways that are sometimes uncomfortable rather than charming — this is the unpolished ancestor, not the affectionate remix.
