Shuriken Sentai Ninninger: AkaNinger vs. StarNinger Hundred Nin Battle!
A 14-minute Sentai spinoff film where two bickering ninjas in ridiculous costumes must set aside their fashion dispute to fight a hundred revived youkai during a legendary supernatural event. It's pure toy-commercial fun: bright, absurd, unapologetically silly, and made for kids who love transformation sequences and monster battles. If you're watching this, you're already in on the joke.

Ultraman2019
A fully modernized take on giant monster action that respects the source material while making it visceral and strange. The CGI is confident, the fights are inventive, and it explores why someone would want to be a hero.
But Netflix's CG animation is divisive, and the tonal shifts between camp and genuine danger can feel jarring if you're not expecting them.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie1995
The granddaddy of Western tokatsatsu that proved the formula works across cultures. Early episodes are wonderfully earnest, the Zords are magnificent, and it's impossible not to get caught up in the sheer enthusiasm.
But The acting can be painfully wooden, especially when actors are delivering dialogue while in suit. Budget limitations are obvious throughout.

Mashin Sentai Kiramager: Episode ZERO2020
Post-pandemic Sentai that's radiant and optimistic without being saccharine. The monster designs are genuinely inspired, and it plays with the formula's conventions in clever ways.
But Deliberately lighter and less dramatic than recent entries. If you want stakes and darkness, this cheerfulness might feel thin.

Devilman Crybaby2018
Both begin when a protagonist discovers a hidden world of supernatural threats; both suggest that becoming a fighter means losing your innocence forever.
What happens if you take the tokatsatsu framework of demons-appearing-from-nowhere and remake it as grimdark anime with experimental visuals and a genuine worldview about human cruelty. It's loud and messy and furious, the opposite register from Ninninger, but it's wrestling with the same core question: why do we fight?
But Graphic violence, sexual content, and a nihilism that lands like a punch. The anime aesthetic and 90s music will alienate tokatsatsu purists.

Godzilla Minus One2023
What happens when someone makes a tokatsatsu film with a genuine literary sensibility. Black-and-white cinematography, post-war despair, practical effects that feel physical and real. A monster film for people who care about the human cost.
But Methodical pacing and existential dread. This isn't popcorn entertainment; it's a meditation on trauma wearing a Godzilla suit.
