Plan B

Other titles called Plan B: the 2021 series (Salto).

Plan B is a scrappy, profane road comedy about two teenage best friends scrambling across Nebraska to find emergency contraception in 24 hours. It's genuinely funny, warmly written, and interested in how friendship survives disaster. Ideal for anyone who liked Booksmart's blend of chaos, heart, and female friendship done right.

TMDb rating3.1

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like teen comedies that take a frank, practical problem seriously while keeping the friendship at the centre, and you enjoy a buddy pair whose chemistry carries a scrappy, road-trip-style errand.

Skip it if you need quick, punchy gags, since this one is gentler and lets its humour sit in the awkward silences between its jokes.

What it asks of you: Expect a brisk 108 minutes that moves from one setback to the next, with the mood staying light even when the stakes feel real.

Booksmart2019

Two brilliant best friends ditch school for one perfect night of teenage mayhem. Olivia Wilde directs with real affection for her characters, and the comedy lands hard without punching down.

But The manic energy occasionally tips into obnoxious, and the plot relies on coincidences that strain credibility even in a comedy.

Eighth Grade2018

Bo Burnham's portrait of an awkward girl in her final year of middle school is tender, painfully accurate, and frequently hilarious. It captures what it actually feels like to be thirteen.

But It's quieter and more melancholy than Plan B. If you want pure laughs throughout, you might find the slower stretches heavy.

Lady Bird2017

Greta Gerwig's debut is a love letter to messy female friendship and the mother-daughter bond, set against a coming-of-age story that feels lived-in. Funny, tender, honest about small-town life.

But The plot is deliberately slight—if you need a driving external conflict, this prioritises character over incident.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Moonlight2016

Both use a specific urgent moment—a sexual encounter, a first love—as the fulcrum for exploring who we are and who we're becoming. But Moonlight expands that moment across decades, whereas Plan B contracts it into 24 hours. Same emotional DNA, opposite velocity.

Barry Jenkins' lyrical meditation on Black masculinity, identity, and first love across three pivotal periods of one man's life. Visually stunning, quietly devastating, and about the friendships and desires we don't have language for.

But It's poetic and slow where Plan B is zippy and loud. There's almost no dialogue in some sequences. This is cinema as painting, not spectacle.

Broad City2014

Two best friends navigate New York City in this chaotic, profane, brilliantly written comedy. The friendship dynamic is the emotional heart beneath the absurdity—sound familiar?

But It's a series, not a quick film, and the early seasons are messier in tone. Some plotlines wander into sketch-comedy territory.

Never Have I Ever2020

Mindy Kaling's show about a teenage girl navigating grief, romance, and friendship while dealing with her late father's legacy. Funny, heartfelt, and genuinely invested in its characters' inner lives.

But It's a series commitment, and the focus on romance plots may feel different from Plan B's friendship-centric chaos.

Superbad2007

Two best friends try to buy alcohol before a party. Yes, it's a teen comedy, but it's genuinely one of the smartest ever made—the friendship between the leads is the real story.

But It's primarily a male perspective on adolescence, and some jokes have dated less gracefully than others. The ending gets sentimental fast.

Someone Great2019

Gina Rodriguez leads a road trip comedy about three best friends spending one last weekend together. It balances wild humour with real emotional stakes between characters who clearly love each other.

But The plot hinges on a heavy premise that arrives suddenly, tonal whiplash for some. The humour can feel uneven as a result.

Good Boys2019

Three 12-year-old best friends skip school and stumble into a series of increasingly chaotic situations. It's earnest, funny, and unexpectedly moving about male friendship and growing up.

But The premise (kids discovering they're clueless) is pretty familiar, and some of the crude jokes miss. It's more sitcom-shaped than Plan B.

Kajillionaire2020

Both are about female friendship as a lifeline and a revelation, but Kajillionaire is interested in the moments friendship becomes something else—desire, transformation, escape. It asks darker questions about who we choose and why, wrapped in bizarre comedy that Plan B never reaches for.

Miranda July's film about a strange, isolated young woman who meets a new friend while living in a con-artist family is funny, genuinely weird, and unexpectedly moving about chosen family and queerness. It's tender without being saccharine.

But It's genuinely strange—the humour is deadpan and oblique. If you're after the accessibility of Plan B, this will feel opaque and very art-house.
