Film
Natchathiram Nagargiradhu
A Tamil romantic drama that uses theatre as both backdrop and mirror. Four queer artists making a play about love discover that their own feelings are inseparable from the social forces trying to crush them. It's funny, tender, political without preaching, and genuinely alive—a film that trusts you to feel complexity.

Courage Under Fire1996
Deepa Mehta's landmark film about two women in Delhi who fall in love while trapped in loveless marriages. Political, sensual, structurally brave. It opened a door; everything after walks through it.
But Made nearly thirty years ago and it shows in the film stock. Some formal choices feel dated. The ending divides even its admirers.

The Half of It2020
A queer romantic dramedy set in a small American town that understands how social pressure calcifies love before it starts. Smart, funny, achingly sincere about the masks we wear in public.
But More polished and less angry than *Natchathiram*. If you want to feel rage, this offers grace instead—which some won't forgive.

Aligarh2016
A true story of a college professor hounded for his sexuality in modern India. Serious, unflinching, fueled by moral clarity. Manoj Bajpayee at his most vulnerable and fierce.
But Brutal in places. The film doesn't soften the cruelty it depicts. This is a story about being destroyed by indifference.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show1975
Both are films obsessed with theatre as a space where love and identity can be remade outside the world's rules. Both trust their audience to laugh and feel at the same time.
A musical comedy about misfits finding freedom and desire outside social rules, made for an audience creating a live ritual around it. Anarchic, stupid, perfect, and fundamentally about theatre as resistance and transformation.
But Deliberately campy and broad—the opposite of subtle. The jokes are bad. The plot is nonsense. If you hate musicals or camp, this is your hell.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui2021
A Punjabi romantic drama about a trans woman and a cis man falling in love against family resistance. Tender, modern, funny, and unafraid to be sincere about desire and identity.
But Mainstream Bollywood sensibilities. Some will find the approach too soft for the subject matter; others may find it melodramatic.

Parched2015
Four women in rural India refuse to accept the lives assigned to them, finding solidarity and sensuality in each other. Visually stunning, morally clear, incandescent with rage and hope.
But Heavy subject matter—sexual violence, exploitation, drought. The visual beauty might feel like a betrayal of the suffering it shows.

Honeyland2019
A Macedonian documentary-fiction hybrid about a beekeeper's solitary life disrupted by a family moving next door. Meditative, strange, unexpectedly moving. Proves that constraint can be a kind of freedom.
But Deliberately weird and slow. The narrative is gossamer-thin. Most of the film is watching people work in silence, which isn't for everyone.

Kapoor & Sons2016
A family comedy-drama about two brothers returning home, with a quiet subplot about queer love at its center. Often funny, gorgeously shot, good-hearted. A mainstream entry point if you need one.
But The queer storyline is secondary and softly handled. If you want that at the center, not the margins, this won't satisfy.
