N.T.R: Kathanayakudu
A biographical drama chronicling the rise of N.T. Rama Rao, the Telugu actor who became a political powerhouse and chief minister. Nandamuri Balakrishna inhabits his grandfather's legend across nearly three hours of grandeur, spectacle, and the messy intersection of cinema and power. For those invested in Indian political history or Telugu cinema's golden age.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a sprawling, affectionate biopic that treats a larger-than-life public figure as a showman first, with the political machinery arriving as a second act rather than the main event.
Skip it if you want a critical or probing portrait of a politician; this one is closer to a celebratory tribute, and its rosy framing may feel one-sided if you came for debate or hard questions.
What it asks of you: It runs close to three hours and spends long stretches on stage triumphs, family gatherings and speeches, so it rewards patience more than it rewards quick cuts or subtle restraint.

Hey Ram2000
Kamal Haasan's ambitious historical epic about communal violence and personal vengeance. A filmmaker of uncommon intelligence wrestling with how cinema tells the stories nations need to tell about themselves.
But Nearly four hours long, structurally demanding, and politically uncomfortable. The tonal shifts between domestic melodrama and philosophical inquiry may feel scattered.

Rang De Basanti2006
Aamir Khan and Atul Kulkarni's film about youth activism, sacrifice, and what it means to serve your country. Sweeping, moving, and genuinely interested in why ordinary people turn toward politics.
But Divisive about its own politics—some find it inspiring, others feel it simplifies complex questions about violence and state power.

Natrang2010
Marathi film about a theater actor who becomes a political candidate. Mordant, beautifully performed, and savagely funny about the machinery that turns performers into politicians.
But In Marathi with subtitles. The tone is satirical rather than laudatory, which might feel cold if you want warmth.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
A Man Escaped1956
Both films are deeply interested in how men operate within systems larger than themselves, and how small acts accumulate into moral choice.
Robert Bresson's austere masterpiece about a prisoner planning escape. Same DNA as any political rise: the accumulation of small decisions, the loyalty between men, the machinery that must be navigated or defied.
But Bresson strips everything away—no music, minimal dialogue, monastic severity. To some this feels transcendent; to others it feels punishingly slow and cold.

The Godfather1972
Coppola's masterpiece about the consolidation of power within a family dynasty. The same engine of ambition, loyalty, and succession that drives any story about men who remake institutions.
But A very different kind of narrative—crime rather than politics, but the structural DNA is similar enough that some may find the comparison reductive.

Mulk2018
Rishi Kapoor in a contemporary drama about citizenship, belonging, and the state's machinery. Smaller in scale but equally concerned with what it means to claim a stake in India.
But More intimate and legal-procedural than epic. The political passion is muted, which some will find mature and others will find underpowered.

The Crown2016
Ten-hour immersion in how power works inside royal machinery. Beautifully shot, magnificently acted, and genuinely curious about the gap between public image and private truth.
But British royalty, not Indian politics. Also, it's so long that you'll need to commit. Some resent its dramatic liberties with recent history.

Kshana Kshanam1991
Mani Ratnam's Telugu heist thriller about ambition, betrayal, and the criminal underworld. Stylish, taut, and proof that Telugu cinema could match Bombay's technical sophistication.
But A thriller rather than biography, and the film stock is grainy by modern standards. The plot moves fast enough that character development gets squeezed.

Jai Bhim2021
Tamil film about social justice and police brutality, with Suriya in a quietly devastating performance. Real political anger without grandeur, and all the more powerful for it.
But Relentlessly heavy and dark. There are no moments of relief, and the injustice it documents will linger uncomfortably.

Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi?2018
Telugu ensemble comedy about middle-class life and small ambitions. Light, charming, and a good reminder of what Telugu cinema sounds like when it's not making a statement.
But Deliberately modest and comedic. If you want political fire or dramatic weight, this will feel slight.

Bombay1995
Where N.T.R looks back on how a man shaped history, Bombay looks at how cinema itself becomes the arena where history is decided.
Mani Ratnam's Muslim-Hindu love story that detonated in 1995 when Hindu nationalism was rising. Inflammatory, gorgeous, genuinely courageous. Cinema as direct political act rather than historical reflection.
But The politics are urgent in ways that can feel preachy. Some will find it didactic; others will find that urgency exactly the point. Also the melodrama is florid.
