My Boyfriend's Back

A 1993 teen comedy-horror hybrid where a lovesick boy returns from the dead as a zombie and has to navigate high school romance without eating anyone. It's silly and earnest in equal measure, blending slapstick with genuine sweetness. Perfect for viewers who like their horror funny and their romance weird.

Weird Science1985

Two nerdy teens accidentally create a woman through computer magic, leading to chaos, wish-fulfilment, and real warmth beneath the '80s excess. Sharp comedy with heart in exactly the same register.

But The humour is deeply rooted in 1985 teen culture; some gags have aged into being incomprehensible rather than funny.

Heathers1989

A dark teen comedy where a high schooler gets tangled up in a murder plot. Nasty, funny, and genuinely moving. The tonal blend of horror and romance is its exact cousin.

But It's significantly meaner and more cynical than My Boyfriend's Back, with real body count consequences that aren't played for laughs.

The Lost Boys1987

Two brothers discover their new seaside town is run by vampires. It's a horror film that never forgets to be fun, with style to spare and genuine romance threaded through the gore.

But It commits harder to being cool and stylish than comedic; if you want the funny beats prioritized, this swings differently.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Dead Ringers1988

Both films use physical transformation and bodily grotesqueness as a metaphor for the psychological state of being an outsider in love—but Dead Ringers refuses to wink at the audience about it.

David Cronenberg's psychological horror about identical twin gynecologists whose symbiotic relationship begins to destroy them. It takes the body-horror premise seriously while exploring obsession and identity with complete commitment.

But It's genuinely disturbing and claustrophobic, with sexual content that's unpleasant rather than titillating. This is Cronenberg at his most unsettling, not a fun ride.

Fright Night1985

A teenage film buff realizes his charming new neighbour is a vampire, and has to figure out how to stop him. Comedy, horror, and genuine stakes all working together beautifully.

But The pacing is uneven in places, and the special effects, while inventive, haven't aged as smoothly as the comedy.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer1992

A cheerleader discovers she's the Chosen One destined to fight vampires. Tonally it's trying to do exactly what My Boyfriend's Back does: balance horror, comedy, and genuine stakes.

But The film feels like a prototype that got perfected in the TV series; this version has less of everything and feels slight by comparison.

Teen Wolf1985

A shy teenager discovers he's a werewolf and uses it to become popular. Pure fantasy wish-fulfilment with sincerity underneath the goofiness and genuine romantic tension.

But It's very much a product of its era; the humour relies on '80s teen tropes that might feel dated or thin.

Vampire's Kiss1989

Nicolas Cage plays a man convinced he's become a vampire after a one-night stand. It's horror-comedy but played with genuine commitment to the delusion, creating something genuinely unhinged.

But The tone is jarringly erratic and Cage's performance is so extreme it alienates many viewers; it's not for everyone.

The Monster Squad1987

A group of kids discover that classic movie monsters are real and team up to stop them. Pure adventure-comedy that loves both its horror homages and its goofy heart.

But It's more children's adventure than genuine comedy or horror; the stakes never feel real enough to matter.

Once Bitten1985

A teenage boy is seduced by a female vampire trying to stay young. It's a sex-comedy horror film that commits to the absurdity while maintaining surprising sweetness.

But The humor is aggressively heterosexual and relies on jokes about virginity that feel more uncomfortable than funny now.

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone1983

Both films are willing to be completely unpopular with mainstream audiences and unapologetic about it, finding joy in tonal whiplash and commitment to a singular vision.

Richard Elfman's surrealist musical about a family discovering a door to a bizarre underworld. It's bizarre, energetic, genuinely funny, and tonally unclassifiable—pure invention that could only exist in 1980.

But It's weird for weirdness's sake; there's no clear narrative, the plot logic doesn't hold, and if surrealism frustrates you, this will drive you up the wall.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire2019

Both films center entirely on the longing and ache of someone loving someone they're not supposed to have, but this asks you to sit in the pain rather than laugh your way through it.

A French artist paints a noblewoman in secret while they fall in love on an isolated island. It's achingly beautiful, sensual, and about the ache of forbidden connection—cinema as pure feeling.

But It's contemplative and slow, with no plot mechanics to drive you forward; if you need incident or dialogue to stay engaged, this will feel glacial and empty.
