Lakshmi
Other titles called Lakshmi: the 2018 film.
A devastating true-story drama about a 13-year-old girl trafficked into sex work who refuses to break under systematic brutality. Lakshmi is unflinching about violence and trauma, but structured around an act of extraordinary courage—a child's decision to testify against her abusers in court. It's a film about survival and agency in circumstances designed to destroy both. For anyone ready to witness difficult things in service of a real story that matters.

Article 152019
A searing police procedural about caste violence and systemic indifference in India. Like Lakshmi, it refuses to look away from brutality, but channels that unflinching gaze into rage at institutional failure. Ayushmann Khurrana is galvanizing.
But The violence is graphic and the pace is relentless. It's a film designed to leave you angry rather than comforted, which some viewers find exhausting.

Natrang2010
A Marathi film about an aging stage actor that becomes a meditation on performance, ego, and how we survive humiliation. Like Lakshmi, it's rooted in real India and builds toward a moment of unexpected dignity. Utterly absorbing.
But It's in Marathi with English subtitles, and the pacing is deliberate. If you need plot momentum, this will feel slow.

Udta Punjab2016
A brutal portrait of drug addiction ravaging a state, told through interconnected lives. It shares Lakshmi's commitment to depicting systemic cruelty without flinching, and finds moments of human connection within that darkness.
But Heavily censored on release, which affected its pacing. Some sequences feel choppy. It's also relentlessly grim.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Bedroom2012
Both films are about people rendered invisible by systems, and both use a patient, unflinching observational approach. But where Lakshmi builds toward public justice and testimony, Bedroom suggests that most suffering happens entirely unwitnessed.
An experimental British film by director Bing Lingard: a single fixed camera on one hotel room across five years, showing the transient lives and small traumas that pass through it. No conventional narrative, no music, just observation. It's about survival in tiny spaces, invisibility, and the lives we don't see.
But It's radically patient and formally austere. If you need character arcs and dialogue, you'll find it maddening. Some call it brilliant; others find it torturous.

Shahid2013
A true-story biography of a young activist tortured and killed by police in Kashmir. Rajkummar Rao is extraordinary. It builds toward a courtroom moment similar to Lakshmi's, where testimony becomes an act of resistance.
But It's a film about state violence and injustice that goes largely unpunished. If you're looking for catharsis, this won't provide it.

Hey Ram2000
Kamal Haasan in a Karamali Krishnan film about communal violence and moral compromise. Like Lakshmi, it refuses easy answers and forces you to sit with the weight of what human beings do to each other.
But It's deliberately fragmented and difficult. Some found it pretentious on release, and it's not easy viewing.

Rang De Basanti2006
Young activists fighting institutional corruption through activism and, eventually, violence. It's a mainstream film with Lakshmi's core belief: that ordinary people can stand against systems designed to crush them.
But The second half pivots toward vigilante action in ways that feel morally messier than intended. The Bollywood elements lighten the tone considerably.

Kahaani2012
A taut thriller about a pregnant woman searching for her missing husband in Kolkata during Durga Puja. It shares Lakshmi's interest in a woman's resourcefulness under pressure, but channels it into genre excitement.
But It's a thriller first, which means some character depth gets sacrificed for plot. The resolution is clever but slightly engineered.

The Dirty Picture2011
Vidya Balan as a woman fighting her way through a brutal film industry. It's about survival and agency in a system that commodifies and discards women—similar thematic territory to Lakshmi, but told as a defiant biography.
But It balances exploitation sequences with Bollywood glamour in ways that can feel exploitative themselves. The tone shifts between serious and sensational.

Jai Bhim2021
A courtroom drama about a lawyer fighting for wrongfully imprisoned Dalit men. It shares Lakshmi's faith in the power of testimony and legal justice, though it's more traditionally structured as an ensemble piece.
But At over two hours, it can feel didactic. Some of the character work is thin in service of the larger argument.

Wadjda2012
Both are about girls finding agency in oppressive systems, but Wadjda suggests that sometimes resistance is small, communal, and quiet rather than dramatic. It's about everyday courage rather than courtroom testimony.
A Saudi Arabian film by Haifaa Al Mansour about a girl determined to ride a bicycle despite social prohibition. It's gentle where Lakshmi is violent, but shares the same architecture: a child resisting a system designed to contain her, supported by women who understand the stakes.
But The tone is almost whimsical—it's a coming-of-age film, not a trauma film. If you need Lakshmi's intensity, this will feel slight by comparison.
