Jesus Revolution
- Period drama
- Light-hearted
Jesus Revolution tells the true story of the 1970s Jesus Movement, when disaffected youth found spiritual awakening through an unconventional revival. It's earnest, character-driven, and moves with the urgency of people discovering faith. Made for believers seeking affirmation and sceptics curious about how counterculture crashed into Christianity.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy faith-based stories that treat belief as messy, personal and often surprising, and you like a period drama where the 1970s counterculture feels lived-in rather than costumed.
Skip it if you want a film that keeps its scepticism at arm's length, since it is openly sympathetic to its characters' conversion story and leans on warm, earnest moments more than sharp edges.
What it asks of you: Two hours of gentle, steady storytelling with a light touch on humour, asking you to settle into character conversations and church-hall scenes rather than chase any sudden jolts.

Fireproof2008
A drama about conviction and transformation that doesn't lecture. It builds tension through moral choice rather than preaching, and earns its emotional payoffs through careful character work.
But Faith-based films can feel dramatically inert, and this one doesn't entirely escape that—some scenes prioritise message over nuance.

Risen2016
A historical drama that approaches its subject with genuine mystery. A Roman officer investigates the Resurrection as a detective story, which makes it work for believers and non-believers alike.
But The premise is conceptually interesting but the execution is sometimes plodding, and it can't quite decide its tonal identity.

Paul, Apostle of Christ2018
A intimate two-hander between an aging Paul and a young Timothy. It's meditative rather than bombastic, focused on doubt and legacy rather than spectacle or conversion moments.
But Deliberately slow-paced and interior. If you want movement and incident, this will feel static and repetitive.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Inherit the Wind1960
Both depict spiritual awakening as inseparable from cultural upheaval and the clash between generations. Both ask what happens when faith meets a moment of social rupture.
A courtroom drama about a small town torn between faith and reason. It's furious and alive in ways modern faith films rarely are—it argues rather than affirms, which is bracing and strange.
But It's a period piece from 1960 that can feel stagey and oratorical. Modern audiences might find it slow and overly theatrical compared to contemporary drama.

The Case for Christ2017
A true story of a hardened investigative journalist examining the Resurrection claims. It respects the intelligence of its protagonist and doesn't dismiss his scepticism as stupidity.
But It's a faith-affirming film, so if you're hoping for genuine doubt to survive intact, you'll be disappointed by the predetermined shape of things.

I Can Only Imagine2018
The origin story of a contemporary worship song, it captures the specific texture of faith communities in America. Warm, specific, and interested in real people rather than symbols.
But It's essentially a feel-good music industry film; if you're allergic to uplift and inspiration, this won't be for you.

Unplanned2019
A conversion narrative about a Planned Parenthood clinic director who becomes pro-life. It's genuinely dramatic because the stakes feel real and the protagonist's journey involves real discomfort.
But It's an explicitly political film with a specific agenda, and it won't convince anyone who doesn't share its worldview. Some find it melodramatic.

The Blind Side2009
A true story of faith, family, and transformation with genuine warmth. Sandra Bullock is excellent, and it's interested in how kindness actually works, not just as sentiment but as sustained choice.
But It's based on a debunked narrative—the real story of Michael Oher is more complicated and less flattering to the film's heroes. The pacing can feel manipulative.

War Room2015
A drama about prayer and marriage that takes its subject seriously. It builds tension through spiritual stakes rather than external incident, and it's visibly made with care and thought.
But It's pedagogical—almost deliberately so—which can make it feel stiff. Long stretches are essentially religious instruction dressed as narrative.

The Greatest Game Ever Played2005
A historical sports drama with class consciousness and faith themes woven through. It's interested in how people of different worlds collide and connect through a shared passion.
But It's a period piece about golf, which is a narrow subject. Even if you're interested, the film occasionally lets its themes overshadow the sport itself.

First Reformed2018
Both centre on faith leaders awakening to moral urgency, but while Jesus Revolution finds joy in revival, First Reformed finds terror in the gap between belief and action. They're inverted mirrors.
An anguished, difficult film about a pastor in crisis confronting faith, morality, and climate collapse. Paul Schrader made a film for people struggling with belief, not people secure in it. Extraordinary craft.
But It's bleak, slow, and offers no comfort. It ends in genuine ambiguity. This is anti-uplift cinema, and it will alienate anyone seeking affirmation rather than struggle.
