Jawaani Jaaneman

A 40-year-old Delhi playboy discovers he has a twentysomething daughter and must navigate unexpected fatherhood while she drags him into her world. It's a bright, fizzy Bollywood comedy about growing up, letting go, and learning that life doesn't stop surprising you. For anyone who enjoys character-driven humour and stories about people becoming better versions of themselves.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like a comedy about a grown man who refuses to act his age, where the laughs come from awkward family mess rather than gags, and you don't mind a little sentiment underneath.

Skip it if you find a lead who wants to be liked every minute, since the jokes and a two-hour runtime can feel like the same bit repeated.

What it asks of you: Expect a loose, chatty stretch of over two hours where the mood shifts from broad teasing to softer, slower scenes, so patience with the middle pays off more than speed.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006

A ensemble family comedy that treats both generations with equal intelligence and humour. It finds comedy in specificity—the details of Delhi life, family dynamics, aging—rather than broad strokes.

But The production design feels dated now, and some of the satire loses urgency. Slower paced than modern comedies.

Badhaai Ho2018

Another film about generational awkwardness done with real heart. The parents-having-sex premise could've been crass, but it's handled with genuine warmth and respect for all involved.

But Relies heavily on physical comedy and embarrassment for laughs, which wears thin if that's not your frequency. Some scenes feel recycled from other films.

Piku2015

Amitabh and Deepika navigating family, aging, and independence with sharp banter and real affection. Shoojit Sircar finds humour in the specific texture of middle-class Delhi life without sentimentality.

But Much of the plot turns on bodily functions humour. The romance subplot feels obligatory rather than organic.

The same actor does the inverse of his usual role—instead of the charming younger man, he's a man stripped of charm, asking harder questions. Shows what happens when a comedic actor plays serious.

Ayushmann Khurrana in a film that looks like a political thriller but functions as something grimmer. It uses genre to sneak in a conversation about caste that Bollywood usually avoids entirely.

But Tonal whiplash between investigative drama and Bollywood beats. The climax prioritises message over storytelling. Not an evening that makes you feel light.

Bobby Jasoos2014

Vidya Balan as a young woman pursuing her passion despite family resistance. Charming, gently funny, with genuine warmth about becoming yourself and finding people who get you.

But The mystery plot is thin and solved too easily. The film coasts on charm rather than plot, which can feel slight.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu2012

Kareena and Imran have brilliant comic timing and the film's willingness to let both characters be messy and flawed. A love story that earns its sentimentality through laughs first.

But The Vegas sequence drags badly. The 'opposites attract' premise is familiar enough that you'll predict most beats.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro1983

The ancestor of smart Bollywood comedy. Two photographers navigate corruption, friendship, and chaos in Delhi with invention and real stakes. Inspired everything that came after.

But Filmed in 1983 and the technical quality shows it. The pacing assumes you have nowhere else to be. The satire is blunt by modern standards.

Dil Chahta Hai2001

Tarun Mansukhani's breakthrough film about friendship, growing up, and resistance to change. The banter is genuinely quick, and it treats its characters' feelings as real even when it's being funny.

But The first half breezes past character development in favour of spectacle. Some of the gender politics haven't aged well.

Fukrey2013

A comedy ensemble about young men trying to get rich in Delhi. It's sharper than it looks, with real affection for its characters' stupidity and genuine stakes beneath the chaos.

But Heavy on crude humour and slapstick. If you need wit to feel like wit, this will test that belief.
