Hunky Dory
- Drama
- Light-hearted
A Welsh drama teacher in 1976 battles the summer heat and adolescent indifference to stage an ambitious version of The Tempest. It's a feel-good film about art-making against the odds, fueled by period detail, earnest performances, and genuine affection for its misfits. For anyone who's ever been saved by a good teacher or believed in something impractical.
If you liked this
Dead Poets Society1989
An idealistic teacher uses unconventional methods to ignite passion in disengaged students, creating moments of real transformation. It has the same faith in art's power to change lives and the same swooning romanticism about possibility.
But It's treaded often enough that the inspirational beats feel inevitable. Some find it manipulative in its emotional architecture.

The History Boys2006
A charismatic English teacher and his unorthodox methods clash with the school's exam-focused agenda. Sharp, funny, full of theatrical energy and young people discovering who they might become through literature and performance.
But The tone shifts between comedy and something darker. Some plot points land as uncomfortable rather than moving.

Rushmore1998
An eccentric student and a burned-out teacher bond over amateur theatrical ambition at a prep school. It's slyly touching, visually playful, and finds genuine emotion beneath the comedy—very much about the theatre as salvation.
But Wes Anderson's stylisation isn't for everyone. It can feel studied or cold if you're not already on its wavelength.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
O Lucky Man!1973
Both are British films made by theatre people who see performance as a moral stance against complacency and conformity. Both have formal playfulness and faith in the redemptive power of getting onstage.
Lindsay Anderson's picaresque celebration of theatre, imagination, and refusal to accept the world as it is. It's formally wild—musicals, direct address, tonal shifts—but shares Hunky Dory's belief that art and creativity are fundamentally transformative and worth fighting for.
But It's nearly three hours long, structurally chaotic, and makes no concessions to narrative clarity. It's an experimental film dressed as a loose comedy; patience required.

The Full Monty1997
A group of unemployed British men form a friendship through a shared project that seems absurd from the outside. It's got the same warmth, working-class specificity, and belief that ordinary people doing something creative together can be transformative.
But The humour relies heavily on body-comedy and stereotype. It hasn't aged as gracefully as its admirers might hope.

Hairspray2007
Period setting, an ensemble of misfits, a teacher-like mentor figure, and genuine joy in performance and camp theatricality. It celebrates people who don't fit and finds beauty in their refusal to be small.
But The John Waters version has more bite; this adaptation is determinedly uplifting in ways that can feel saccharine.

Mamma Mia!2008
A group comes together for a theatrical production on an island, and the film is essentially a celebration of music, friendship, and letting loose. It has a similar sunny warmth and commitment to the idea that joy is worth pursuing.
But It's unabashedly silly and often genuinely cringeworthy. If you don't surrender to ABBA enthusiasm, it'll feel like work.

Four Rooms1995
A scrappy ensemble British comedy that celebrates misfits and outsiders finding unexpected community. The energy and affection for its characters echoes what makes Hunky Dory so charming.
But It's uneven in quality, relying on sketch-comedy timing that doesn't always land. The plot barely exists, which frustrates some viewers.

Puffball2007
A mid-1970s set story with a strong central female character navigating small-town dynamics with intelligence and warmth. It shares Hunky Dory's period texture and interest in women making their own way.
But It's quite slow and understated. Those looking for plot momentum will find it frustratingly languid.

Sightseers2012
A British ensemble comedy that celebrates eccentric, creative people finding unlikely kinship. It has genuine affection for its characters despite their flaws and celebrates oddness as a virtue.
But The comedy is much darker and more caustic than Hunky Dory's warmth. It's also considerably more violent and crude.

Cemetery Junction2010
Both are affectionate comedies about ordinary British people in the 1970s discovering that art, imagination, and friendship offer real resistance to the lives they're expected to accept. Both celebrate people who are considered unremarkable by their towns.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's tender, funny story about three working-class boys in 1970s England trying to escape their predetermined futures. It's got the same faith that loyalty and creativity matter, the same period detail, and the same warm awkwardness about young people figuring out who they are.
But It's more sentimental than cynical, and for some that tips into mawkishness. Also uneven—tonal shifts between comedy and something more serious don't always work.
