Film
Heretic
Heretic is a taut home-invasion thriller where two young missionaries encounter a charismatic, intellectually vicious host who traps them in a battle of faith and survival. Hugh Grant's softly menacing performance anchors a film that treats theological debate as genuine jeopardy. It's a locked-room game of ideas and escalating dread, built for viewers who like their horror cerebral and their tension sustained.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy clever, talky thrillers where a theological argument carries as much menace as any monster, and a cat-and-mouse game is played with nothing but words.
Skip it if you need scares to arrive on schedule or a brisk plot, since this one is patient, dialogue-heavy and happy to let a long conversation do the unsettling.
What it asks of you: Patience first: most of its 111 minutes sit inside one house, with unease built slowly through talk rather than through set-piece shocks.

Hostel2006
A masterclass in escalating dread and moral compromise. Two young travellers find themselves in nightmare circumstances, forced to make impossible choices. The tension comes from character vulnerability, not just gore.
But Graphic violence and sexual content that doesn't flinch. Some find it gratuitous rather than purposeful.

The Silence of the Lambs1991
A cat-and-mouse game between captor and captive built on intelligence, psychology, and unequal power. The killer is seductive and articulate, the threat genuine. Masterfully paced psychological horror.
But Older film that moves deliberately. Contains violence and exploitation of a dark nature that can feel heavy.

Ready or Not2019
A bride becomes the hunted in a lethal game of hide-and-seek. Dark humour balances genuine stakes. Energetic, clever, and finds real scares in the absurdity of its setup.
But Tonal shifts between comedy and horror won't land for everyone. Some find it uneven.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Spotlight2015
Both pit sincere belief systems against a darker truth. Both understand that ideas themselves can be weapons and that conviction is not the same as safety.
Two ideologies in direct conflict—faith institutions versus accountability journalism. Like Heretic, it's a battle of convictions and intellectual rigor, where the real horror is institutional rot beneath respectability.
But A procedural about reporting, not action or visceral thrills. Slow, methodical, and powered by dialogue. Some find it dutiful rather than gripping.

The Cabin in the Woods2012
Young people in isolation facing unknown threats—but the film deconstructs the formula itself. Smart, meta, genuinely frightening, and stacked with ideas about genre and choice.
But Relies heavily on audience familiarity with horror tropes. Plot twists might feel contrived if you're not leaning into the premise.

Barbarian2022
A stranger-in-an-unfamiliar-space setup that spirals into something wildly unexpected. Unsettling, inventive, and unafraid to wrong-foot the audience. Pure escalation.
But The tonal whiplash is intentional but brutal. Some find it silly rather than terrifying by the end.

X2022
A film crew arrives at an isolated property to shoot a movie and discovers the owners have deadly intentions. Expertly crafted tension, sharp filmmaking, and a real sense of inescapable danger.
But Slasher conventions mean predictable beats. Not breaking new ground, just executing expertly.

Funny Games2008
Two charming killers trap a family in their home and force them to participate in psychological games. It's about the contract between filmmaker and viewer, deeply unsettling without relying on gore.
But Deliberately frustrating and bleak. The point is to make you uncomfortable, which some find insufferable rather than artful.

You're Next2013
Home invasion becomes unexpected power reversal. A woman discovers she has skills the killers didn't anticipate. Clever, inventive, and refuses to play victim.
But Genre thrills over psychological depth. If you want to think rather than thrill, this might feel slight.

The Gift2015
A seemingly innocent neighbour develops an unsettling fixation on a new couple. Slow-burn paranoia with excellent performances. Explores how niceness can mask something darker.
But Moves quietly and deliberately. If you want pyrotechnics rather than psychological tension, it's a slog.

Tender Is the Night1962
Both explore how articulate, attractive men can weaponize their intelligence to trap others. Both understand charisma as a form of control.
A man's charisma masks pathology. A group becomes emotionally ensnared by someone who seems brilliant until they realize his ideas are poison. Three seasons of intelligent, unsettling drama about coercion and influence.
But HBO miniseries format (cancelled after one season in this case). Assumes viewer patience. Won't appeal if you want resolution or comfort.

Prayers for Bobby2009
Both use religion as the battleground. Both ask what happens when faith is used to trap rather than free. Both understand that doctrine can become a cage.
A mother's religious convictions destroy her relationship with her gay son. Devastating portrait of faith turned into cruelty. What happens when certainty destroys compassion. Sigourney Weaver is extraordinary.
But Emotionally punishing and ends in loss. Not a film for catharsis or uplift. About grief, not survival.
