Every Christmas Has a Story
- Drama
- Light-hearted
A TV personality's on-air Christmas rant lands her in the most festive town in America for a redemption arc. Hallmark-grade comfort viewing: eggnog-warm, predictable, and designed for December afternoons when you want nothing to challenge you. Made for people who genuinely enjoy Christmas movies and aren't worried about originality.
If you liked this
When Calls the Heart2013
Wholesome period drama with genuine ensemble chemistry and real emotional stakes beneath the cosy exterior. When Calls the Heart has earned its devoted following through character work and restraint.
But If you're allergic to earnestness or prefer your drama with edge, this will feel saccharine. The pacing is deliberately slow.

Gilmore Girls2000
Fast-talking mother-daughter banter and genuine warmth. Both lead characters are sharp and flawed; the show doesn't ask you to check your brain at the door like many comfort dramas do.
But Later seasons lose focus. Some viewers find the constant pop-culture references dated or exhausting.

Hart of Dixie2011
Lighter, funnier take on the small-town drama. Strong cast chemistry, Southern Gothic flavour without the angst, and a genuine sense of community that doesn't feel forced or saccharine.
But Cancelled on a cliffhanger. Tonal whiplash between comedic moments and drama can feel jarring.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Schitt's Creek2015
Surface-level plot similarity (fish-out-of-water, image rehabilitation, small-town acceptance), but Schitt's Creek refuses sentimentality and builds comedy from character truth, making it the opposite of formulaic.
A wealthy woman loses everything and must rebuild her life in a small town with oddballs she didn't choose. Comfort television that earns every laugh and grows genuinely moving as characters develop real depth and mutual respect.
But First season is weak; it takes time to find its footing. The premise sounds twee until the writing proves otherwise.

Moonlight2016
Achingly beautiful exploration of identity, masculinity, and longing. Quiet, precise filmmaking that trusts you to feel things without spelling them out. Released the same year, but operating in a completely different register.
But Deliberately paced and introspective. If you're here for Christmas warmth, this is the opposite: it's winter and grief.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies2016
If you're watching comfort TV but secretly hate the formula, here's what happens when someone sabotages it deliberately. Absurdist fun that respects the original while thoroughly dismantling the genre's tropes.
But The joke wears thin. Uneven tone; some scenes land and others desperately don't.

The Christmas Secret2000
Older Hallmark production before the formula calcified. Better dialogue, stranger plot turns, and a cast that feels less exhausted by the material.
But Dated production values. Some plot elements haven't aged well.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale2010
Both interrogate what Christmas means and remake the mythology through genre storytelling, but Rare Exports uses genre subversion and existential dread where Every Christmas uses romantic comedy convention.
Finnish film that deconstructs Christmas mythology with deadpan horror and dark humour. A reindeer herder's son encounters something ancient and dangerous in the Arctic. Gorgeously shot, genuinely unsettling, wildly original.
But Not a feel-good film. Cold tone, ambiguous morality, and violence that will horrify anyone expecting Christmas warmth.
