De Dana Dan
- Comedy
- Con-artist caper
- Light-hearted
De Dana Dan is a high-octane Bollywood comedy heist where two scheming con men attempt an elaborate dog-napping ransom scheme that spirals gloriously out of control. It's fast, loud, and stuffed with elaborate set pieces and romantic subplots. Perfect for viewers who want colour, chaos, and Akshay Kumar at full throttle.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like farce where a plan spirals through a run of escalating mistakes and every character is scrambling for the same stupid goal, with a Bollywood comedy's appetite for song and melodrama.
Skip it if you want a tight, lean caper; at nearly three hours with a lot of padding, the slapstick repeats its beats and the busy plotting can start to feel like it is running in circles.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, loud ride of rapid-fire chaos that rarely pauses, so you need patience for the bloated stretches and a tolerance for broad, exaggerated comedy.

Hera Pheri2000
The spiritual predecessor to this kind of Bollywood con-comedy: two bumbling friends stumble into schemes with mounting absurdity. Suniel Shetty's here too, reprising similar energy with even sharper comic timing.
But Shot on a lower budget with a different rhythm—feels older and less glossy than De Dana Dan's maximalism.

Khosla Ka Ghosla!2006
A wickedly smart heist-comedy about ordinary people outwitting a corrupt builder. Clever writing and character work prove Bollywood comedy doesn't need to be loud to be brilliant.
But Restrained and grounded compared to De Dana Dan's theatre-of-chaos approach. Much quieter film.

Dhamaal2007
Four men chase buried treasure across India in a madcap road comedy. Same energy as De Dana Dan—escalating schemes, physical comedy, and an ensemble cast bouncing off each other.
But Even more plot-heavy and sometimes sacrifices logic for the next joke. Can feel exhausting if you want breathing room.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Sting1973
Both films built on the mechanic of an elaborate scam with multiple moving pieces, but The Sting proves the genre works just as well whispered as shouted. Same DNA, opposite volume.
Paul Newman and Robert Redford run a meticulously choreographed con on a mobster. The blueprint for all heist-comedies: elegant schemes, ensemble timing, and the pleasure of watching a plan come together.
But A serious film masquerading as a con-game; the humour is dry and rooted in character. Completely different register from De Dana Dan's theatrical screaming.

Golmaal – Fun Unlimited2006
Rohit Shetty's debut showcases his maximalist comedy style: three friends create chaos through misdirected schemes and mistaken identities. Frenetic and hugely entertaining.
But The humour is broad and sometimes juvenile. Subtlety is not the goal, and it shows.

Singh Is Kinng2008
Akshay Kumar plays an innocent Punjabi who stumbles into crime-world schemes. Great chemistry between the leads and genuinely creative comedy sequences wrapped around a caper.
But Tone wobbles between slapstick and romance; the film can't decide what it wants to be.

Housefull2010
Akshay Kumar in a pure ensemble chaos-comedy where everyone's lying about everything. Absurdist plotting with a massive cast doing committed character work.
But Over two and a half hours of premise-driven comedy. The plot is deliberately paper-thin, which frustrates some viewers.

Partner2007
Govinda and Salman Khan as mismatched best friends running a matchmaking scheme. Lighter tone than De Dana Dan, but the core energy of friends getting tangled up in crime is identical.
But Deeply dated in its relationship politics and gender dynamics. Not aging well.

Phir Hera Pheri2006
The sequel brings back the cons and catastrophes with Akshay Kumar now alongside Suniel Shetty. More elaborate schemes and a tighter grasp on what makes the formula work.
But Feels like retreading familiar ground. The novelty has worn off by the third con.

Chandni Chowk to China2009
Akshay Kumar plays a street vendor who gets mistaken for a kung-fu master. Action-comedy spectacle with absurdist plotting and Akshay's physical comedy at full blast.
But The plot is genuinely nonsensical and the film seems aware it doesn't care. Can feel hollow and exhausting.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels1998
Both are ensemble con-comedy tangles where the audience is kept deliberately confused about who has what leverage, and the pleasure comes from watching it unravel. But De Dana Dan is for broad laughs; this is for the viewer who enjoys a puzzle.
Guy Ritchie's debut about London criminals whose schemes collide in increasingly hilarious ways. Sharp, vulgar, densely plotted—every character's stupidity tangles with everyone else's.
But British slang and criminal underworld specific to London; you have to work to follow the logic. American audiences often find it impenetrable.

In The Name Of Scheherazade Or The First Beergarden In Tehran2019
Both films are *about* the pleasure of stories and schemes—but where De Dana Dan plays it straight as entertainment, Scheherazade is a film about storytelling that keeps winking at you. It's the highbrow cousin who shows up to De Dana Dan's party and asks philosophical questions about the con itself.
Russian comedy-caper about a con artist telling escalating lies through an Arabian Nights narrative frame. Visually lush, narratively fractured, constantly surprised by its own premise. Con-stories that comment on their own unreliability.
But Deliberately disorienting structure; the film doesn't make story sense and isn't trying to. Requires patience for ambiguity and loves metaphor over plot clarity.
