Così fan tutte

Other titles called Così fan tutte: the 1992 film.

Harnoncourt's 1989 film of Mozart's final da Ponte opera captures the Wiener Philharmoniker at peak brilliance, distilled to pure music-making. Shot in a Vienna studio, it strips away theatrical spectacle for crystalline sound and faces alive with intelligence. Essential for anyone who wants to hear what Mozart actually sounds like—not what opera houses think it should.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love opera as theatre, where a sly comic plot, sharp ensemble singing and a conductor's fierce attention to period style matter more than spectacle.

Skip it if you want a lean, fast night in; at nearly three hours of sung dialogue and stylised mock-tragic comedy, the pace is unhurried and the conventions can feel stiff.

What it asks of you: It runs close to three hours, sung throughout with subtitles, and rewards patience with a slow build of musical detail, a bright and often wry tone, and attention to voices more than visuals.

The Marriage of Figaro1994

Harnoncourt conducts the same orchestra through Mozart's greatest comic opera, with even more theatrical invention. Figaro moves faster and cuts deeper than Così, and the production design crackles with life.

But It's three and a half hours, and the recitatives, though essential, can feel like standing in line between the arias if you're new to opera.

Don Giovanni1990

This filmed performance captures the darkest of Mozart's three great operas—seduction, murder, damnation. The score is volcanic, the moral questions real. Furlanetto returns here as the title character and is magnetic.

But It's genuinely unsettling in places, and the Don's treatment of women is played as what it is. Some productions soften this; this one doesn't.

The Magic Flute2006

Mozart's most enchanting score meets a story of initiation and love. Julie Taymor's 2006 production is visually stunning without overwhelming the music. A joy in ways Così deliberately isn't.

But Taymor's production design can distract from the singing, and the opera's misogyny (softened here) is still visible. Some prefer the music in concert form.

Idomeneo1983

Mozart's longest opera, full of extraordinary arias and a moral core about power, sacrifice, and doubt. This conducted by Harnoncourt himself captures both the grandeur and the domestic anguish underneath.

But It's nearly four hours, the plot (father must sacrifice son to appease Neptune) is operatic in the worst way, and you need patience with the long stretches between big moments.

Die Entführung aus dem Serail1987

Mozart's comic genius in full bloom, lighter in subject but technically fearless. A charming love story wrapped in Enlightenment ideals and genuine musical invention.

But The 'exotic' Turkish setting plays out in ways that feel dated now. Some of the jokes land more softly than they once did.
