Chasing Mavericks
A true-story drama about teenage surfer Jay Moriarity's obsession with conquering Mavericks, a notoriously dangerous Northern California wave. It's a film about mentorship, ambition and the reckless courage of youth, shot with genuine affection for its subjects and their world. For viewers who love sports stories grounded in real passion rather than manufactured stakes.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love coming-of-age sports stories where a reluctant student and a gruff coach build trust through hard, patient training, and you don't mind sentiment when the ocean does the heavy lifting.
Skip it if you find earnest, feel-good mentorship hard to sit through without an edge, since the emotional beats are signposted and the dialogue leans on inspirational speeches.
What it asks of you: Just under two hours at an unhurried rhythm: long stretches of training and water work, a sunlit coastal glow, and sentiment that builds gradually rather than arriving in bursts.

Point Break1991
The spiritual ancestor: surfing action, intergenerational male bonding, and that perfect balance of spectacle and character that makes you care about the stunt as much as the story.
But The '90s action movie syntax feels dated now, and Keanu Reeves' acting is... well, Keanu in 1991.

Whip It2009
Drew Barrymore's directorial debut about a teenage girl finding her people through an extreme sport. Same DNA: mentorship, self-discovery, a community you didn't know existed, shot with real warmth.
But Roller derby might feel niche, and the film wears its indie spirit on its sleeve, which some find precious.

Soul Surfer2011
Another true-story surfing film with genuine stakes and a teen protagonist. Less polished than Mavericks but more emotionally raw about trauma, recovery, and what it means to get back in the water.
But The faith element is prominent and earnest in ways that won't land for everyone.

Something you would not have found on your own.
My Own Private Idaho1991
Both explore what drives young men to pursue something or someone at the cost of everything else, and both use landscape—the ocean, the road—as a character that mirrors the protagonist's internal state.
Gus Van Sant's portrait of two young men—one searching for home, one searching for something to believe in. It shares Mavericks' meditation on youth, mentorship, and the dangerous grip of obsession, but it's unflinching about self-destruction.
But It's experimental, non-linear, and deals with homelessness and sex work. It requires patience and emotional openness, and offers no easy answers.

The Endless Summer1966
The documentary that defined surf cinema: two friends chasing perfect waves around the world. Pure joy, impossibly beautiful cinematography, and the actual foundation for every surfing film that came after.
But It's 95 minutes of surfing and travel with minimal plot; if you want narrative drive, you won't find it here.

Lords of Dogtown2005
Skateboarding instead of surfing, but identical in structure and spirit: young men discovering an extreme sport, mentorship, rivalry, the intoxication of being young and fearless. Heath Ledger is extraordinary.
But It's grittier and less inspirational—the downside of that fearlessness gets real, and the ending is bittersweet.

Hondo1953
John Wayne as a grizzled mentor to a young man in a harsh landscape. The template for every gruff-older-man-softens-through-teaching film, including this one. A primer on what makes that dynamic work.
But It's a Western from 1953, so it moves at a Western pace and contains Western-era attitudes.

Newsies1992
A musical drama about teenage boys finding community, fighting for something bigger than themselves, and dancing extremely well. It's got the same earnestness and the same willingness to let young people be heroes.
But If you're not signed up for a musical, the song-and-dance numbers will feel like the film is working against itself.

Breathe2017
Both hinge on the relationship between a young person with impossible ambitions and an older man who helps them realise it. Both ask whether it's love or cruelty to help someone chase something that might destroy them.
An astonishing true story: a young man, a brilliant older man, and an impossible physical challenge. Like Mavericks, it's about mentorship and the will to defy limitations, but it's achingly intimate and morally complex.
But It's about terminal illness and paralysis. The film doesn't look away from pain, and the ending is known from the start.

Mulholland Drive2001
Both films are genuinely interested in the mentorship dynamic and what happens when a younger person internalises an older person's vision of who they should become. Both suggest that obsession and love are sometimes indistinguishable.
David Lynch's fractured narrative about obsession, mentorship, and the cruel machinery of pursuing a dream. It's in a completely different register—noir instead of sports drama—but the emotional core is identical: the intoxication of ambition and its cost.
But It's abstract, deliberately confusing, nearly three hours long, and actively resists straightforward interpretation. Most people find it either brilliant or insufferable.
