Captain Miller
A 1930s period action film set during the British Raj, following a disillusioned former soldier turned freedom fighter. Captain Miller blends historical drama with hard-hitting action sequences, anchored by Dhanush's charismatic performance. It's for viewers who want spectacle married to political conviction, where the hero's arc is as important as the explosions.

Rang De Basanti2006
A generation-defining film about idealistic young Indians transforming into activists. It has the same fire in its belly about resistance to injustice, with action that serves a larger moral awakening rather than existing for its own sake.
But The runtime is substantial and the tonal shifts between comedy and gravity can feel abrupt if you're not in sync with its particular emotional wavelength.

Padmaavat2018
Another sweeping historical epic with a protagonist refusing to submit to foreign occupation. The production design is immaculate, the action is visceral, and it shares Captain Miller's investment in honour and sacrifice as driving forces.
But It's visually dense to the point of occasional visual fatigue, and the romantic subplot may feel like it competes with the main narrative rather than serving it.

Khiladi2023
Also stars Dhanush in a mission-driven thriller where personal trauma fuels an act of defiance. If you're drawn to Dhanush's intensity in Captain Miller, this shows a different facet of that same controlled fury.
But The plot mechanics are fairly straightforward spy-thriller stuff, which can feel predictable if you've seen a lot of this genre before.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Ash Is Purest White2018
Both follow a protagonist's moral awakening across a historical backdrop, but where Captain Miller reaches toward heroic action, this film examines the quieter costs of surviving political transformation. They're inverse approaches to the same fundamental question.
A Chinese epic that spans decades, following a woman's transformation through changing political landscapes. Zhangke Jia's film shares Captain Miller's interest in how individual conscience navigates historical upheaval, but told with a restless, almost documentary-like precision.
But It's deliberately anti-dramatic in its approach to spectacle and resolution. If you want catharsis, this film will deliberately withhold it.

The Ghazi Attack2017
A gripping historical action film centred on an act of military rebellion. Like Captain Miller, it takes a real historical moment and builds tension around a protagonist choosing conscience over orders.
But The submarine setting means most of the action is internal and claustrophobic rather than expansive, so it has a different energy entirely.

Master2021
Dhanush opposite Vijay Sethupathi in a cat-and-mouse thriller with real ideological weight beneath its action-film surface. The performances are two actors at absolute peak intensity.
But It's deliberately brutal in ways that feel punishing rather than entertaining, and won't give you the rousing catharsis Captain Miller does.

Kaavalan2011
An older Dhanush film that shows his range in a historical setting. It's worth revisiting his earlier work to see how he's grown into roles like Captain Miller's.
But By modern standards the production values show their age, and the romantic elements may feel dated in their execution.

Asuran2019
Dhanush in a revenge narrative with genuine socio-political underpinning. His performance here is raw and unglamorous, showing the human cost of violence in ways that deepen the themes Captain Miller explores.
But It's emotionally exhausting rather than exhilarating, and the violence is presented as tragedy rather than triumph.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh2002
Both films make heroes of freedom fighters who rejected colonial authority, but they're separated by 20 years and a shift in how Indian cinema tells these stories. Watching them together maps how the country's relationship to its own history onscreen has become more complex and less purely celebratory.
A Bollywood retelling of the independence fighter's life with Ajay Devgn, made with genuine reverence for its subject. It's how mainstream Indian cinema traditionally told stories of anti-colonial resistance—operatic, sincere, unironic in its patriotism.
But The filmmaking is dated and the approach is reverent to the point of hagiography, which can feel stiff next to Captain Miller's more contemporary action-film sensibility.
