Boiler Room

Giovanni Ribisi plays a college dropout who talks his way into a suburban brokerage that's less legitimate than it looks, and gets seduced by the noise, the money, and the men who make it. It's a hustle movie with a conscience — fast, funny, testosterone-thick, and quietly appalled by everything it's showing you. Great for anyone who likes watching charisma curdle into rot.

Wall Street1987

The original template — Gekko's seduction of Bud Fox is the same mentor-and-mark dynamic Boiler Room runs, decades earlier and with sharper suits. 'Greed is good' still lands.

But Stagier and slower than modern finance thrillers; the late-80s trading-floor jargon can feel dated.

The Wolf of Wall Street2013

Same pump-and-dump world, cranked to operatic excess. DiCaprio's Belfort is the id Ribisi's Seth Davis is trying not to become.

But Three hours of hedonism can numb rather than indict — some viewers find it a celebration rather than a warning.

Glengarry Glen Ross1992

The purest distillation of boiler-room desperation ever filmed — closers screaming at each other over worthless real estate leads. Every line is a knife.

But It's a filmed play: dialogue-driven, claustrophobic, almost no plot movement. Not for anyone wanting momentum.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Sweet Smell of Success1957

Same skeleton as Boiler Room: a predatory mentor, a desperate young man who wants in, and a moral collapse dressed up as success — decades before finance bros existed to embody it.

A young hustler apprentices himself to a monstrous, magnetic older man who can make or ruin lives with a phone call — and slowly loses himself in the flattery. It's savage, gorgeous, quotable black-and-white noir about ambition as a form of self-erasure.

But No stock tickers, no trading floor — this is 1950s Broadway gossip columnists, and the rhythms are theatrical rather than kinetic.

American Psycho2000

Same year, same yuppie ecosystem of status anxiety and business-card one-upmanship, pushed into black comedy and horror.

But Considerably nastier and stranger — this is satire with a body count, not a morality tale about brokers.

Margin Call2011

A quieter, colder cousin — one long night inside a bank realizing it's about to detonate the economy. Less swagger, more dread.

But Talky and internal by design; if you want energy and hustle, this is the opposite temperature.

Rounders1998

Swap stocks for poker, but the mentor-corrupts-protégé shape and the addictive thrill of easy money are identical.

But Card-game mechanics take up real screen time; you'll enjoy it more if you already like poker.

The Big Short2015

Zooms out to the whole rotten system Boiler Room shows one small corner of — same anger, delivered with jokes and fourth-wall winks.

But The financial explainers are clever but dense; it demands more attention than the plot rewards some viewers with.

Two for the Money2005no page yet

Almost a direct cousin — a young hustler groomed by a slick older operator, this time in sports betting instead of stocks.

But Less beloved and rougher around the edges than the others here; the moral arc is more predictable.

Rogue Trader1999no page yet

A true-story cousin about a young trader whose lies snowball until they take down a 200-year-old bank — same cocky-kid-in-over-his-head engine.

But Ewan McGregor's charm carries it, but it's a smaller, quieter film than the ones surrounding it here.

LuLaRich2021

Strip away the trading floor and the same psychology remains: charismatic recruiters, manufactured urgency, and ordinary people talked into believing they've found the one legitimate shortcut to wealth.

A documentary series about the leggings MLM LuLaRoe, told through the people who got pulled in believing they'd found their ticket out. The recruitment pitches sound eerily like Seth's sales scripts, minus the irony.

But It's real people losing real money, not a slick thriller — the tone is sadder and messier than a scripted film allows.

Sorry to Bother You2018

Same engine — a desperate young man discovers he's good at selling people things that will hurt them, and has to decide what he'll let himself become — but run through absurdist sci-fi instead of straight drama.

A broke telemarketer discovers a "white voice" that makes him unstoppable at sales, and rises through a company hiding something far stranger than penny stocks. Furious, funny, and genuinely unpredictable.

But Goes full surrealist satire in its second half — if you want grounded realism, this will feel like it's changed movies on you.
