Blackadder: Back & Forth

Blackadder's fake time machine turns real, flinging him and Baldrick through history for a millennium-spanning victory lap. It's the cast you love doing what they do best: rapid-fire wordplay, physical comedy, and character work so precise it lands every joke. A love letter to the series, best watched after you've seen the show, but absolutely worth the trip.

TMDb rating3.5

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you already love the Blackadder double act and want its sharp insults and crisp wordplay bolted onto a time-travel romp through history's ridiculous episodes.

Skip it if at thirty-three minutes it is a snack, so if you want the slow-burn character arcs of the full series, this will feel slight.

What it asks of you: Thirty-three minutes of brisk, nonstop gags with barely a pause, so it wants your full attention on the rapid-fire lines from first frame to last.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail1975

Same era of British comedy DNA: absurdist logic, anarchic energy, historical settings played for laughs. If you love Blackadder's shameless anachronisms and willingness to undercut pretension, this is where some of that lineage lives.

But It's a sketch film without a real plot, which means it meanders. Some of the gender politics haven't aged especially well.

QI2003

Stephen Fry in his element, riffing on obscure facts with comedians who are genuinely smart and funny. Same celebration of intelligence-as-entertainment that makes Blackadder's wordplay land so hard.

But It's very long and episodic—you can dip in, but commitment required. Also quite British in its conversational rhythms.

Horrible Histories2009

Sketch comedy about history with the same irreverent energy and rapid jokes. It captures that Blackadder spirit of making the past ridiculous without requiring a PhD to enjoy.

But It's aimed younger, so the jokes are broader and the smut is missing. Feels slight compared to what you're watching.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Blackadder's Christmas Carol1988

It's the prototype: same cast doing time travel comedy with the same structural logic of moving through history to make jokes land.

A special that deconstructs Dickens while the cast do different characters across centuries. It's the show colliding with literature and winning, with the same time-travel playfulness but a tighter story.

But At 50 minutes it's longer than Back & Forth and leans harder on continuity with the series. You need to know who these people are before this will sing.

A Bit of Fry and Laurie1987

Fry and Laurie's sketch show is pure joy: clever, silly, morphing characters in rapid succession. You'll see the comic precision that made them essential in Blackadder, freed from character constraints.

But Sketch shows are uneven by definition. Some bits land better than others, and it's very of its time visually.

The League of Gentlemen1999

Darkly comic character work with the same British comedy obsession with precision and repetition. The characters lodge in your brain the way Baldrick and Melchett do, though the tone is much nastier.

But It's genuinely disturbing sometimes, designed to make you uncomfortable. Not the warm chaos of Blackadder at all.

The League of Gentlemen poster

Spaced1999

Rapid-fire comedy with visual gags, character warmth, and the kind of joke density that rewards close attention. It's doing something structurally different but with similar comic intelligence.

But It's about young London slackers in the 90s, so the cultural reference points are completely different. Might feel dated or alienating if that's not your world.

Fawlty Towers1975

Rowan Atkinson's spiritual predecessor in British sitcom brilliance. Tighter and meaner than Blackadder, but built on the same foundation of character-driven mayhem and impeccable comic timing.

But Only twelve episodes exist, and the humor is more cringe than laugh-out-loud. Basil's rage gets exhausting over a full episode.

Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge1994

Early Armando Iannucci, finding the comedy in pretension and incompetence. It's talk-show comedy that builds character through repetition, similar to how Blackadder's humor lives in the relationships.

But The format is a slow burn and quite arch. If you want fast laughs, this demands patience and a taste for awkwardness.

Good Omens2019

Two mismatched characters forced through a situation neither controls, bonding through wit and desperation. Same chemistry engine as Blackadder and Baldrick, dressed in different fabric.

Neil Gaiman adaptation with David Tennant and Michael Sheen as mismatched immortals who've watched history happen. Rapid banter, character chemistry, and the same pleasure in watching smart people spar while chaos erupts around them.

But It's longer, more serialized, and the fantasy world-building matters. You can't just sit back—you have to follow a plot.
