Same architecture underneath: a chosen young mediator, elemental forces standing in for real-world conflict, and a refusal to let anyone be purely a villain. Miyazaki did it first, in a different medium, decades earlier, with a much sadder heart.

A hand-drawn Miyazaki film from four decades ago about a young pacifist trying to broker peace between warring human kingdoms and a poisoned, half-sentient natural world — the actual blueprint Avatar's creators pointed to when building this universe.

But Subtitled, slower, and far more elegiac than anything in the Avatar franchise — this is an environmentalist parable, not an action-adventure romp.
