A Call to Spy

A Call to Spy tells the true story of three women recruited into Churchill's secret army during WWII: a American spy with a prosthetic leg, a British intelligence officer, and a pacifist radio operator. It's a taut, character-driven thriller that treats its subjects as complex agents rather than symbols. For anyone hungry for overlooked histories and women-centered espionage drama.

Trying2020

A gripping limited series about the cryptanalyst Alan Turing and his team's race to crack Enigma during WWII. Shares the same blend of historical stakes, intellectual tension, and the personal toll of wartime secret work.

But It's deliberately paced and meditative—more interested in psychology than explosions. Some find the structure repetitive across its five episodes.

Operator2015

A compelling documentary about the female code-breakers of Bletchley Park, the real women behind the machinery. Direct historical complement that shows you exactly who these operatives were and what they endured.

But It's a documentary, not dramatized—no dialogue, no reconstruction, just interviews and archive. If you want story rather than fact, this won't deliver it.

The Imitation Game2014

Fictionalized biography of Alan Turing cracking Enigma, with similar wartime espionage stakes and a protagonist working against institutional hostility. Beautifully shot and emotionally grounded beneath the thriller surface.

But The screenplay takes liberties with history in ways that bother people who know the real story. Some find it overly sentimental for what should be a colder tale.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Enigma2001

Both dramatize the unglamorous truth of WWII intelligence work: the waiting, the codes, the networks of ordinary people, and the women doing work nobody would believe they were capable of.

A WWII thriller centered on Bletchley Park codebreaker Tom Jericho and a mysterious woman intelligence agent. Same historical moment and espionage stakes, but told as a taut romantic thriller with real menace underneath.

But The plot turns on increasingly contrived coincidences. It prioritizes romance over historical accuracy in ways that betray the real story.

Charlotte Gray2001

A British woman sent to occupied France as a secret agent. Combines intimate character work with genuine thriller momentum, and treats female courage without making it the whole point of the story.

But Released in 2001 and it shows—the cinematography and pacing feel of that era. Less taut than modern spy films, which some find slack.

Resistance2020

The true story of a Jewish-French WWII resistance fighter. Shares the film's focus on ordinary civilians turned operatives, moral ambiguity, and the cost of clandestine work on friendships and identity.

But Dark and grim—there's little lightness here, and the ending is not triumphant. Some viewers find it punishingly bleak.

Eye in the Sky2015

A contemporary spy thriller about the weight of decisions in covert operations. Different setting but the same moral complexity and focus on operatives as whole people, not just their missions.

But Modern espionage rather than historical—the surveillance technology and politics will feel distant from WWII. Some find the procedural elements tedious.

Threads1984

Both are British wartime dramas that refuse sentimentality about sacrifice. They show what operating in shadows costs you personally, and they trust that the human story is enough.

A brutally unglamorous British film showing nuclear war's real consequences—not action, but survival, loss, grief, and the collapse of everything. Treats conflict as tragedy, not spectacle.

But Utterly bleak and still shocking. Made for television and it shows. Entirely opposed to entertainment, which some see as its virtue and others as unbearable.

Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements2019

Both center on people society declared unfit for the work they performed brilliantly. Both ask what we mean by disability, and show how narrowness of vision blinds us to strength already present.

A documentary following three deaf musicians and a spy who is deaf, each navigating a world built for others. Virginia Hall's prosthetic leg and determination echo across these stories about capability redefined and contribution nobody expects.

But A documentary essay, not narrative cinema. Experimental in structure and you have to meet it halfway. Very quiet, both aurally and in pacing.
