Viktor Bryukhanov

Bryukhanov is the director of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, roused from sleep as the reactor is already burning. He clings to protocol and denial in equal measure, insisting the core cannot have exploded, more worried about blame and Moscow's reaction than the graphite on the ground in front of him.

Con O'Neill plays denial as a physical state, not a character flaw — sweating, stammering, doubling down on figures he must know are wrong. The writing makes him a product of a system that punishes honesty, and O'Neill lets you watch a man calculate, in real time, that the lie is still the safer option.
