Vasily Ignatenko

Vasily Ignatenko is a young firefighter in Pripyat, called from bed on an ordinary night to what looks like an ordinary blaze at the power plant. He goes without hesitation, following orders, doing the job he's trained for, unaware of what the smoke and light over the reactor actually mean.

The show uses him to put a human face on scale too vast to otherwise grasp, and Nagaitis plays him with an unshowy, working-class steadiness that makes his courage feel like habit rather than heroics. His scenes with his wife carry an ordinary tenderness that the surrounding catastrophe never lets you forget.
