Valery Legasov

Valery Legasov is a mid-level Soviet nuclear scientist pulled into a late-night meeting about a reactor accident nobody yet wants to call a catastrophe. Bespectacled, soft-spoken, and easy to overlook in a room full of bureaucrats, he is the one person who understands exactly how bad Chernobyl is — and insists on saying so.

Jared Harris plays competence as a kind of quiet dread, letting Legasov's stammering caution curdle into something close to fury as he's forced to repeat the same truths to men who don't want to hear them. The show gives him no swagger, only precision and conscience, and Harris makes both feel dangerous in a system built to punish honesty.
