Spike Thomson swaggers into the Junior Gazette newsroom as the brash American new boy, all wisecracks and easy charm, determined to needle editor Lynda Day at every turn. He treats deadlines as suggestions and rules as challenges, more interested in stirring things up and getting a reaction than filing copy on time.

Dexter Fletcher plays Spike's cockiness with just enough vulnerability underneath that the bravado never curdles into obnoxiousness. The writing uses him as a spark plug against Lynda's control, and the crackle between them—half antagonism, half something else—gives the show its most electric, quotable scenes.
