Rize Kamishiro

Rize Kamishiro in Tokyo Ghoul (2014), played by Kana Hanazawa.

Rize Kamishiro is the quiet, striking young woman Kaneki keeps noticing at his favorite café, always alone with a book by the same reclusive author he loves. She is soft-spoken, a little mysterious, and seems genuinely delighted to finally have someone to talk literature with — which is exactly what draws him in.

The show spends just enough time letting her feel like a gentle, bookish crush before pulling the rug out, and Kana Hanazawa's voice work is key to that misdirection — warm, unhurried, faintly amused, giving no hint of what's underneath. It's a masterclass in first-episode trust, and it recolors everything that follows Kaneki.

"Those cowardly lions have confined themselves in a cage of their own free will. Even though the lion is supposed to be the 'king of all beasts.'"— Rize Kamishiro, Tokyo Ghoul Side Story: Rize
