Renata

Renata is one of five captives held in a glass-walled basement by a scientist obsessed with near-death experiences, each of them marked by having died and come back. Sharp-tongued and wary, she keeps her guard up in captivity, unwilling to trust easily, watching the others and the man who controls them with equal suspicion.

Paz Vega plays Renata with a flinty, watchful energy that cuts through the show's dreamier instincts — she's the one captive who never fully surrenders to wonder, and that skepticism gives the group's strange bond its necessary friction. It's a small role made vivid by refusal: she resists belief until belief is earned.
