Police Chief Martin Döhring

Martin Döhring holds the job of police chief in the small German town of Winden, which means he is the one who has to make sense of a child's disappearance using ordinary procedure — statements, searches, timelines — in a place that keeps refusing to behave like an ordinary town. He is methodical, weary, and visibly out of his depth.

Hartwig plays him as a man clinging to bureaucratic normalcy while the ground shifts under him, which gives Dark's uncanny plot a grounded, almost bureaucratic witness. He works because he represents the audience's own instinct to explain things rationally, right up to the point where rational explanation runs out.
