Number One

Number One first turns up in the fleet as Brother Cavil, a sharp-tongued, doubt-filled figure who ministers to the faithful while making it clear he finds their prayers absurd. He is dismissive, funny, and coldly rational, more interested in exposing hypocrisy than comforting anyone, and he clearly enjoys being disliked.

Dean Stockwell plays him with a weary, needling wit that makes every scene sharper just by his presence — he treats piety and self-importance as personal insults. The character is written as pure contempt dressed up as candor, and Stockwell's delivery makes that contempt sound like the only honest voice in the room.
