Matt Kerr is the grown-up shadow over the Junior Gazette, the weary professional handed the thankless job of keeping a newsroom full of teenagers pointed at something resembling journalism. He's gruff, dry, quick to sigh at their chaos, but he treats the paper as a real paper, not a school project, and expects them to earn that seriousness.

Clive Wood plays him without a trace of sitcom-adult condescension, which is exactly what the show needs: an authority figure whose exasperation reads as respect rather than indulgence. He never softens into a mentor cliché. The needling, deadpan comic timing he brings makes Matt's rare moments of genuine approval land like something earned.
