MacKenzie "Mac" Morgan McHale

Mac walks back into Will McAvoy's control room as his new executive producer, fresh off years reporting from war zones and fresh off the end of their relationship. She wants to remake the nightly broadcast into something that actually matters, and she says so loudly, constantly, to a newsroom that isn't sure it wants saving.

Sorkin gives her the impossible job of selling idealism without sounding naive, and Mortimer does it by playing the conviction as exhaustion rather than triumph — someone who has seen enough real danger to be impatient with television's fake kind. Her rapid-fire earnestness against Will's cynicism is the show's engine, and she never lets the earnestness curdle into smugness.
