Lieutenant Ezri Dax

Ezri Dax arrives on Deep Space Nine an ensign counselor, thrust into hosting the Dax symbiont after an emergency joining she never trained for. She talks too fast, doubts herself constantly, and finds Sisko's crew already grieving a different Dax entirely. She wants only to be useful, and not to be a disappointment.

The writing hands Nicole de Boer an impossible job — replacing a beloved character without pretending to be her — and she solves it by playing Ezri as visibly unfinished: rambling, self-interrupting, funny in a nervous key. That awkwardness becomes the point. Watching her grow into the weight of seven lifetimes, in real time, is its own quiet reward.
