Lieutenant Al Giardello

Lieutenant Al Giardello runs the homicide unit out of Baltimore's squad room, a man of mixed Sicilian and African-American heritage who wears both halves of that identity without apology. He rides herd on his detectives, absorbs pressure from above so they don't have to, and treats the job as a matter of conscience as much as clearance rates.

Kotto plays command as weariness held upright by will, a boss who has seen every excuse and still expects better. The writing never lets Giardello become just an authority figure issuing orders from behind a desk — he argues policy, defends his people, and carries the show's moral weight without ever announcing that he's doing it.
